This medication helps improve blood sugar control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes using a combination of empagliflozin and metformin. It is given as an adjunct to diet and exercise for patients whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled, and it is especially effective in patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, for patients with cardiovascular disease, it is necessary to refer to expert guidelines regarding this drug's impact on cardiovascular events. This medication is used to improve blood sugar control and assist in diabetes management.
The recommended dose for this medication is 1 tablet once a day, taken twice daily. Doses should be determined considering each patient's current treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability, without exceeding 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin. - Patients experiencing difficulty controlling blood sugar with metformin alone or in combination with insulin and other medications should take 5 mg of empagliflozin twice a day (total of 10 mg) along with their existing dose of metformin.
This medication assists in controlling blood sugar. However, there are several important precautions to consider when taking it. First, this medication may cause a rare side effect known as severe lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis can become a dangerous condition if too much lactic acid accumulates in the body, so it is particularly important to monitor your condition while taking this medication. Additionally, there is a risk of hypoglycemia when taken with insulin or other diabetes medications, so blood sugar levels should be checked frequently. This medication should not be used in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, acute cardiac issues, severe infections, or dehydration. Furthermore, it is considered safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to take this medication. Regular renal function tests should be done before starting the medication and during treatment, and the medication should be discontinued if renal function deteriorates. This medication may have side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, urinary infections, genital infections, and increased urination. Women may experience genital infections more frequently, so consult a physician immediately if symptoms occur. Additionally, this medication can cause fluid volume loss, hence caution is needed when prescribing it to patients at risk of dehydration or hypotension. Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it is recommended not to consume excessive alcohol while on this medication. This medication may reduce vitamin B12 levels, so it is advisable to monitor vitamin B12 levels during prolonged use. Elderly patients or those with diminished renal function should use this medication with particular caution, starting with the minimum effective dose is recommended. Finally, inform healthcare professionals immediately about any symptoms of hypoglycemia or any unusual symptoms while taking this medication.
Urticaria, severe swelling, chest tightness, shortness of breath, cold sweat, pallor, severe allergic reactions, severe rash with fever, blisters, skin peeling, pain in the mucous membranes of the mouth and eyes, severe skin adverse reactions, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, asthma attacks, respiratory issues accompanied by cough and fever, breathing problems, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), profound lethargy, liver abnormalities (jaundice), sudden onset of serious conditions.
