View approved original text

In particular, patients with cardiovascular disease should be aware of precautions regarding cardiovascular events. This medication is used for effective blood sugar management in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

How to take

Adult dose

The recommended dose of this drug is 1 tablet, twice a day. The dose should not exceed empagliflozin 25 mg and metformin 2000 mg, and it should be determined considering the patient's treatment regimen, effectiveness, and tolerance. If sufficient blood sugar control is not achieved with metformin alone or in combination with other medications, 5 mg of empagliflozin twice daily (total 10 mg) and the patient's existing dose of metformin should be administered.

Precautions

This drug helps regulate blood sugar levels. However, there are several points to pay attention to when using this medication. First, this drug may cause a rare side effect known as lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis can become a dangerous condition due to the excessive accumulation of lactic acid in the body, so if symptoms such as sudden muscle pain, weakness, difficulty breathing, or abdominal pain occur while taking this drug, immediate consultation with a physician is necessary. Additionally, if taken alongside insulin or other diabetes medications, hypoglycemic symptoms may occur, so it is important to closely monitor blood sugar levels. Patients with impaired kidney function or severe renal impairment, those with acute infections or dehydration, or those in serious states such as acute myocardial infarction should not take this medication. It is also advised for pregnant or breastfeeding women to avoid using this drug for safety. This medication may increase the risk of urinary tract infections or genital infections, so if any symptoms of infection appear, prompt treatment is required. Moreover, this drug may lead to fluid loss, thus patients with dehydration or cardiovascular conditions should take caution. Since vitamin B12 levels may decrease, it is recommended to monitor via blood tests during long-term use. Elderly patients or those with reduced kidney function should regularly check their kidney function and adjust their dosage accordingly. It is advisable to avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication, and dosing should be temporarily discontinued if scheduled for surgery or undergoing tests with iodinated contrast agents. Lastly, side effects of this medication may include indigestion, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, skin rashes, etc., so if unusual symptoms appear, consultation with a physician is necessary.
