View approved original text

This medication is used to improve blood sugar control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes in conjunction with diet and exercise therapy. It is particularly appropriate for patients whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled and should be used cautiously according to the advice of a specialist in cases accompanied by cardiovascular disease. This allows for consideration of both blood sugar management and the risk of cardiovascular events in patients. Therefore, this medication is used to aid in blood sugar control and cardiovascular protection.

How to take

Adult dose

The recommended dosage of this medication is 1 tablet per dose, twice daily. It should be determined according to each patient's current treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability without exceeding the total limits of 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin. For patients who have insufficient blood sugar control using metformin alone or in combination with insulin or other therapies, then the recommended dosage is 5 mg of empagliflozin administered twice daily (total daily dose of 10 mg) along with the patient's current metformin dose.

Precautions

This medication may cause a rare but serious side effect of severe lactic acidosis, so caution is necessary. Hypertension may occur when used with other diabetes medications; therefore, blood sugar levels should be carefully monitored. It should not be used in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment or conditions that may lead to acute renal deterioration. It should also not be taken in cases of unstable or acute heart failure. Administration should be discontinued before and after tests using iodine contrast agents, and resumed only after kidney function has returned to normal. It is safer for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to take this medication. Treatment may occasionally need to be temporarily suspended during dehydration, severe infections, surgeries, etc. Regular kidney function tests should be conducted to check for abnormalities, especially in elderly patients or those with poor kidney function. Due to the risk of hypoglycemia, dosage adjustments may be necessary when taken with insulin or sulfonylureas. This medication may increase the risk of urinary tract infections and genital fungal infections, and immediate treatment is required if infection symptoms appear. Regular blood tests may be necessary during long-term use due to potential decreases in Vitamin B12 levels. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so excessive drinking should be avoided while taking this medication. This medication may cause fluid volume depletion, so patients with low blood pressure or cardiovascular diseases need to be cautious. While taking this medication, blood sugar control and adverse reactions should be regularly monitored and discussed with a doctor.
