Precautions

This medication is used for diabetes treatment and has the effect of lowering blood sugar. However, it may rarely cause a serious metabolic complication known as lactic acidosis, requiring caution. Lactic acidosis is particularly dangerous in patients with decreased kidney function, heart disease, sepsis, etc. This medication should not be administered to patients with moderate to severe renal impairment or severe heart failure. Additionally, this medication should be temporarily discontinued before and after tests using radiologic contrast agents and restarted only after confirming normal kidney function. It is also safe not to use this medication during pregnancy or for women who may become pregnant, patients with significantly impaired liver function, severe infections, or trauma. This medication may increase the risk of hypoglycemia when combined with other diabetes medications, so it is essential to be aware of hypoglycemia symptoms and management methods. Patients should regularly monitor kidney and liver functions and check vitamin B12 levels regularly during treatment. If sudden abdominal pain, vomiting, difficulty breathing, muscle pain, or fatigue occurs during use, consult a doctor immediately. The risk of lactic acidosis increases when taken with alcohol; therefore, it is advisable to avoid alcoholic beverages. Elderly patients or those with compromised kidney function particularly require dosage adjustments and regular monitoring. Patients about to undergo surgery should discontinue this medication 48 hours before surgery and restart it only after confirming normal kidney function post-surgery. This medication has not been proven safe and effective in children or adolescents, so it should not be used in these populations. Moreover, while taking this medication, if severe joint pain or skin blisters occur, inform healthcare personnel immediately. Store this medication out of the reach of children, and be cautious as transferring it to another container may alter its quality.
