Precautions

This medication is used to help control blood sugar levels. When taking this medication, caution is advised as a rare side effect called lactic acidosis may occur. Lactic acidosis is a dangerous condition caused by excessive accumulation of lactic acid in the body, with symptoms that may include difficulty breathing, muscle pain, weakness, abdominal pain, and others. If these symptoms occur, you should inform your healthcare provider immediately. This medication should not be administered to patients with impaired kidney function, as decreased kidney function can increase the risk of side effects due to drug accumulation in the body. Patients with severely reduced cardiac function, acute infections, severe trauma, or those facing surgery should temporarily discontinue this medication. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should preferably avoid this medication, and nursing mothers should consult with their doctor. When combined with other diabetes medications, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase, so it is essential to be well-informed about symptoms of hypoglycemia and to respond appropriately by taking sugar if symptoms occur. Patients with impaired liver function should also avoid this medication, and excessive alcohol consumption can be hazardous. This medication may lower vitamin B12 levels; therefore, it is advisable to undergo regular blood tests to monitor vitamin levels. Elderly patients may have reduced kidney function, so dosage adjustments according to doctor’s instructions and regular kidney function tests are necessary. Regular blood tests and kidney function tests are essential while taking this medication, and consult your healthcare provider if any sudden changes in symptoms occur. In case of overdose, visit a hospital immediately for appropriate treatment; this medication can be removed through hemodialysis. The safety and effectiveness of this medication have not been established in children, so it should not be used in this population.
