Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to help control blood glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used especially in cases where patients have never received diabetes medication before or when sufficient blood glucose control cannot be achieved with monotherapy. Additionally, it is effective when blood glucose is not adequately controlled with either metformin or sitagliptin alone, or when substituting a combined therapy of the two drugs. Furthermore, it can be administered in combination with metformin and sulfonylurea, or metformin and thiazolidinedione when blood glucose control is not achievable with those regimens. It also aids in blood glucose control when insulin and metformin combination therapy is insufficient. Therefore, this medication is used in various therapeutic situations to improve blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Precautions

This medication contains both sitagliptin and metformin and is primarily used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Serious allergic reactions may occur while taking this medication, so if symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck appear, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. There is a risk of developing acute pancreatitis, so it is essential to notify healthcare professionals if severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or nausea occurs. This medication should not be administered to patients with poor kidney function, and dosing should be discontinued or adjusted based on kidney function test results. It should not be used in situations that could affect kidney function, such as heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, severe infections, dehydration, or acute illnesses. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, or those who are breastfeeding, should not take this medication. This medication may cause hypoglycemia, so caution is needed for those skipping meals, having irregular eating habits, or engaging in excessive exercise; the risk of hypoglycemic symptoms may be heightened when combined with other hypoglycemic agents. Regular kidney function and blood tests should be conducted during treatment, and supplementation may be necessary if vitamin B12 levels decrease. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of side effects with this medication, so it is advisable to avoid drinking. Before surgery, consult with a physician and discontinue this medication 48 hours prior, and resume only after confirming normal kidney function post-surgery. Severe joint pain or skin disorders may occur rarely during treatment; notify healthcare professionals immediately if these symptoms occur. In cases of overdose, seek immediate medical attention, as the medication can be removed through hemodialysis. This medication can be used in the elderly, but dose adjustments and regular monitoring are necessary due to common age-related declines in kidney function. Maintain regular meals and exercise, and consistently monitor blood glucose and kidney function, consulting with a physician immediately if any unusual symptoms arise.
