Therefore, this medication serves as an important treatment option that aids in blood sugar control and cardiovascular health management for patients with type 2 diabetes.

How to take

Adult dose

The dosage of this medication is individualized based on the patient's current treatment, efficacy, and tolerability. Generally, it is administered once daily with the evening meal. The maximum dosage is one daily dose of dapagliflozin 10 mg/metformin extended-release 2000 mg, taken as 2 tablets of 5 mg/1000 mg. If the patient has no previous experience with diabetes medications and has difficulty controlling blood sugar with monotherapy, the initial therapy should be 5 mg/500 mg taken once daily.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and helps lower blood sugar levels. However, it can very rarely cause a dangerous condition called severe lactic acidosis, so it should not be used in patients with poor kidney function, severe infections, dehydration, or acute heart problems. Moreover, caution is advised when taken with other diabetes medications such as insulin or sulfonylureas due to the risk of hypoglycemia. Patients with reduced kidney function, elderly patients, or those with decreased fluid volume should have their kidney function and fluid status carefully evaluated before starting this medication, and during treatment, symptoms of hypotension or changes in kidney function should be closely monitored. This medication can increase the risk of genital and urinary tract infections, so immediate treatment is required if symptoms of infection appear. It may also reduce vitamin B12 levels, so it is advisable to regularly check vitamin B12 levels during long-term use. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication, and it is safer to discontinue it for a period before and after surgery. Excessive alcohol consumption may also increase the risk of side effects, so it should be avoided. While taking this medication, be attentive to symptoms of hypoglycemia or dehydration, and if any unusual symptoms arise, consult a doctor immediately. Finally, safety and efficacy in children have not been established, and elderly patients should have their kidney function regularly checked while adjusting the dosage.
