Blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication assists in blood sugar control for adult patients with type 2 diabetes by combining dapagliflozin and metformin. When taken alongside dietary and exercise therapies, it can effectively manage blood sugar levels. It is particularly suitable for patients whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled, and can be used cautiously in cases of cardiovascular disease or risk factors. This medication improves blood sugar control and aids in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
This medication is generally administered once daily with the evening meal. The maximum dose is 10 mg of dapagliflozin and 2000 mg of sustained-release metformin once a day, taken as two tablets of 5 mg/1000 mg. When used as initial therapy, the recommended starting dose is one tablet of 5 mg/500 mg or 10 mg/500 mg once daily. For patients treated with metformin, the recommended dose is once daily, 10 mg of dapagliflozin.
This medication is used for diabetes treatment and should not be used in patients with poor kidney function or certain health conditions. This medication can rarely cause life-threatening lactic acidosis, so monitoring kidney function and symptoms is crucial. Caution is needed when taken with insulin or other diabetes medications due to the risk of hypoglycemia, and dose adjustments may be necessary if required. This medication should not be administered to patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, dehydration, severe infections, or impaired cardiac function. Prior to and after surgery or imaging tests involving iodine contrast agents, this medication should be discontinued for a period and restarted only after kidney function has returned to normal. This medication may increase the risk of genital and urinary tract infections; therefore, it is important to consult a healthcare professional immediately if any infection symptoms appear. While taking this medication, symptoms such as dizziness or low blood pressure may occur, so elderly patients or those taking blood pressure medications should exercise caution. This medication may lower vitamin B12 levels, so regular monitoring of vitamin B12 levels is recommended during long-term use. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are nursing should not use this medication, and it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Excessive alcohol consumption may increase the risk of side effects from this medication, so alcohol should be avoided during treatment. During the use of this medication, hydration status and kidney function should be regularly monitored, and any unusual symptoms should be reported to a healthcare professional promptly. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children, so it should not be used in this population. This medication does not significantly affect driving or operating machinery, but caution is advised due to the potential for dizziness.
