Precautions

This medication helps in controlling blood sugar levels. It can rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis, where excessive lactic acid builds up in the body, leading to potentially harmful situations. Also, care should be taken when used in conjunction with insulin or sulfonylurea medications as this may lead to hypoglycemia. Patients with poor kidney function, severe infections, heart problems, or dehydration should not use this medication. If you are scheduled to receive iodine contrast for radiological examinations, you must stop taking this medication at least 48 hours prior to the test and ensure normal kidney function before resuming. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use this medication, and caution is also advised for children and the elderly. During treatment, kidney function and fluid status should be regularly monitored, and it is important to closely observe for symptoms of hypotension or dehydration. If symptoms like genital infections, urinary tract infections, dizziness, hypoglycemia, or dehydration occur during treatment, consult a doctor immediately. This medication may interact with other drugs, so inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medications. Excessive alcohol consumption may increase the risk of side effects, hence it should be avoided, and regular testing may be needed as it may lower vitamin B12 levels. Additionally, this medication is usually taken long-term for blood sugar control and if sudden changes in symptoms or adverse reactions occur, immediate notification to healthcare staff is required. Lastly, store this medication out of reach of children and keep it in the original container to maintain its quality.
