Blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used to help control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes who are taking dapagliflozin and metformin in combination. It is prescribed as an adjunct to diet and exercise to effectively lower blood sugar levels. Additionally, for patients with type 2 diabetes who do not achieve adequate blood sugar control and have cardiovascular disease or risk factors, the impact of dapagliflozin on the occurrence of cardiovascular events should be referred to expert guidance. This medication is used to treat with consideration of both blood sugar management and cardiovascular health.
This medication is typically administered once daily with the evening meal. The maximum dose is 10 mg of dapagliflozin and 2000 mg of extended-release metformin once daily, taken as 2 tablets of 5 mg/1000 mg. For initial therapy, the recommended starting dose is 1 tablet of 5 mg/500 mg or 10 mg/500 mg taken once daily. Dosing should be adjusted gradually to reduce gastrointestinal side effects of metformin.
This medication is used for the treatment of diabetes. This medication should not be used in patients with impaired kidney function or in conditions that can affect kidney function such as dehydration, severe infections, or acute myocardial infarction. Additionally, it is safer not to administer it to pregnant or nursing women. This medication can occasionally cause a rare side effect called lactic acidosis, so patients should consult a doctor immediately if symptoms such as fatigue, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, or abdominal pain occur. When used in combination with other diabetes medications, there is a risk of hypoglycemia, so insulin or sulfonylurea dosage adjustments may be necessary. During treatment with this medication, regular monitoring of kidney function, blood pressure, and electrolyte status is required to ensure there are no abnormalities. Furthermore, patients who are dehydrated or have low blood pressure should be especially cautious, and any signs of dehydration should be treated immediately. This medication can increase the risk of genital and urinary tract infections, so rapid treatment is necessary if there are any signs of infection. Vitamin B12 deficiency can occur, so it’s advisable to monitor blood vitamin B12 levels for patients on long-term treatment. Excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided while taking this medication, as alcohol can increase the risk of side effects. Before and after surgical procedures or radiographic studies with contrast agents, this medication should be discontinued for a period of time, and it should only be resumed after confirming normal kidney function. In cases of overdose, immediate medical attention is required, and dialysis treatment may be beneficial if needed. Special caution is needed when administering this medication to children or the elderly, especially since elderly patients commonly have decreased kidney function, necessitating dosage adjustments and regular evaluations. This medication does not significantly impact driving or operating machinery, but caution is advised as dizziness can occur. Lastly, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original container to prevent misuse or deterioration of quality.
