Improvement of hypercholesterolemia (primary, mixed type) and treatment of dyslipidemia
This drug helps to lower elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B protein, triglyceride, and non-HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, especially in heterozygous familial and non-familial patients, and mixed dyslipidemia patients, while increasing good cholesterol HDL cholesterol levels. It also assists in effectively managing cholesterol levels as an adjunct to dietary therapy. Therefore, it is used to improve lipid abnormalities related to cholesterol.
This drug is administered once daily regardless of meals. The recommended starting dose is 2/10 mg once daily. If the LDL cholesterol-lowering effect is insufficient, the dose may be increased up to a maximum of 4/10 mg once daily. Dosage adjustments should be made appropriately at intervals of 4 weeks or more. For patients with liver impairment, a starting dose of 1 mg once daily is recommended, and the maximum dosage is 2/10 mg once daily. For patients with moderate and severe liver impairments, this drug should not be administered.
This drug should not be administered to certain patients. For example, patients with allergies to any ingredient in this drug, those with active liver disease, severe liver impairment, bile duct obstruction, those taking cyclosporine, patients with myopathy, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and children should not use this drug. Additionally, it should be used cautiously in patients with slightly decreased liver function, those consuming excessive alcohol, patients with renal impairments, hypothyroidism patients, individuals with genetic muscle diseases or a history of muscle-related issues, elderly individuals, and patients with severe muscle weakness. During the administration of this drug, care should be taken to monitor for adverse reactions. Common symptoms may include headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, muscle pain, and fatigue; although rare, liver dysfunction, muscle damage, and allergic reactions may occur. In particular, if symptoms such as muscle pain or weakness, changes in urine color appear, consultation with a physician should be sought immediately, as these could be signs of muscle damage or rhabdomyolysis. This drug is metabolized in the liver, so regular liver function tests should be conducted, and it may be necessary to discontinue or adjust the dosage if liver enzyme levels are elevated. Furthermore, this drug may interact with other medications, so those taking cyclosporine, fibrates, niacin, or erythromycin should inform their physician and exercise caution. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this drug, and women planning to become pregnant should consult their physician before use. Safety and efficacy for children have not been established, thus it is not recommended for use in this population. Elderly patients may have an increased likelihood of adverse reactions due to declines in bodily functions, thus dosage adjustments may be necessary if symptoms occur. In case of an overdose, there is no specific antidote, so treatment should be symptomatic, and liver function and muscle enzyme levels should be monitored. Lastly, this drug should be kept out of reach of children and care should be taken to avoid transferring it to another container.
