Improvement in blood sugar control and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication helps adult patients with type 2 diabetes improve blood sugar control alongside dietary and exercise therapy. It can be used alone or in combination with other medications. Particularly for type 2 diabetes patients who are not well controlled, especially those with cardiovascular disease, guidelines regarding the risk of cardiovascular events must be observed. This medication is effectively used to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
The recommended dose for this medication is 10 mg once daily for monotherapy and additional combination therapy with insulin and other blood sugar-lowering agents. If the patient tolerates this medication well and additional blood sugar control is needed, the dose may be increased to 25 mg once daily. This medication can be administered without regard to meals. The tablet should be swallowed whole. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered.
This medication should not be taken by those who are allergic to the active ingredient or any of the components. It should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Patients with severely impaired kidney function, end-stage renal disease, or those undergoing dialysis should not take this medication. Patients with slightly impaired kidney function may need dosage adjustments when taking this medication, and use should be discontinued if kidney function deteriorates further. Use with caution in patients with mild to moderate heart failure, and it is not recommended for patients with severe heart failure. There may be a risk of hypoglycemia when taken with other blood sugar-lowering agents such as insulin or sulfonylureas, so dosage adjustments may be necessary. While taking this medication, attention should be paid to potential symptoms such as hypoglycemia, genital and urinary tract infections, increased urination, and signs of dehydration. Particularly in elderly patients or those at risk of fluid loss, monitoring for dehydration and hypotension is important, and temporary discontinuation may be necessary. Serious metabolic abnormalities known as ketoacidosis may occur, and if symptoms are suspected, immediate consultation with a healthcare provider is required. This medication is not recommended during pregnancy, and it is advisable to avoid use while breastfeeding. The safety and efficacy in children and adolescents under 18 years have not been established. Caution is required when driving or operating machinery due to the risk of hypoglycemia. Rare side effects such as lower limb amputations or serious perineal infections have been reported with long-term use, making regular monitoring and observation important. There may be interactions with other medications, so inform your healthcare provider of any other drugs being taken.
