Precautions

This medication may cause severe lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia, so caution is needed. It should not be administered to patients with moderately severe renal impairment or heart failure, and kidney function should be routinely monitored. For examinations using radiocontrast iodine agents, this medication should be discontinued at least 48 hours prior to the examination, and should only be resumed after confirming normal kidney function. It should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Patients with severe infections or severe traumatic systemic disorders should temporarily discontinue this medication, and if undergoing surgery, it should also be stopped 48 hours prior to the surgery. Patients with liver dysfunction or those who excessively consume alcohol should refrain from using this medication. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use this medication. Irregular meals, vigorous exercise, and interactions with other medications may increase the risk of hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis, so caution is necessary. Routine testing of liver and kidney functions is required during treatment with this medication, and any symptoms of liver dysfunction should be reported to healthcare professionals immediately. If symptoms of acute pancreatitis arise, the medication should be stopped, and medical attention should be sought immediately. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, muscle cramps, lethargy, and hypothermia, and immediate treatment should be sought if these symptoms occur. Due to the risk of hypoglycemia, especially elderly patients or those with poor nutritional status should monitor their blood sugar levels frequently. This medication does not replace insulin therapy and is not suitable for patients with type 1 diabetes. Alcohol consumption increases the risk of lactic acidosis, so alcohol should be avoided during treatment. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery.
