Improvement of cholesterol and lipids in hypercholesterolemia (primary, homozygous familial) and dyslipidemia.
This medication is used to improve conditions of primary hypercholesterolemia, which is characterized by elevated cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in the blood. Additionally, it reduces elevated levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol in patients with mixed dyslipidemia, while increasing good cholesterol (HDL cholesterol). It is used as an adjunct to other lipid-lowering therapies in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. This medication should be used in conjunction with an appropriate dietary regimen and can help reduce the risk of atherosclerotic vascular diseases caused by dyslipidemia. For effective treatment, secondary causes such as diabetes and hypothyroidism must be confirmed and treated first, and treatment progress should be monitored with regular lipid tests. This medication plays an important adjunctive role in the treatment of dyslipidemia by improving blood lipid levels.
This medication is administered once daily regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, doses from 10/10mg to 10/80mg per day are administered. The initial dose recommended is either 10/10mg or 10/20mg per day. If a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol (more than 55%) is required, an initial dose of 10/40mg per day is recommended. After initiation of therapy, lipid levels in the blood should be assessed at intervals of more than 2 weeks.
This medication can cause a rare side effect affecting the muscles known as rhabdomyolysis, so if symptoms of severe muscle pain or weakness occur, the physician should be notified immediately. In particular, patients at risk of compromised kidney function due to severe infections, hypotension, major surgery, or trauma should temporarily discontinue or suspend this medication. Patients allergic to any components contained in this medication, those with liver disease or muscle conditions, and pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication. Additionally, patients with certain antiviral medications or lactose intolerance should also avoid this medication. Caution should be exercised when using this medication in patients at high risk of muscle problems such as those with alcohol dependence, liver dysfunction, impaired kidney function, hypothyroidism, or the elderly, and regular testing is required. There is an increased risk of muscle abnormalities when taken together with fibrate medications, so caution is needed. Liver function can be affected by this medication, hence liver function tests should be performed before and during treatment, and immediate consultation with a physician should occur if any signs of liver damage appear. Pregnant women should not take this medication as it may be harmful to the fetus, and women of childbearing age should use appropriate contraception during treatment. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children have not been established, thus it is not recommended. In cases of overdose, no specific antidote exists, therefore treatment and supportive care according to symptoms are necessary, and liver function and muscle enzyme levels should be monitored regularly. Dizziness may occur while taking this medication, so caution is advised during driving or operating machinery. Finally, this medication can interact with several other medications, so it is essential to consult with a doctor or pharmacist if other medications are being taken.
