Improvement in blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used either as monotherapy or in combination with other medications, alongside dietary and exercise therapies, to help control blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It effectively aids in improving and managing blood glucose levels.
The recommended dose of this medication for monotherapy or combination therapy is 20 mg once daily. It can be taken regardless of meals. When administered in combination with sulfonylureas, a reduction in the dose of sulfonylureas may be considered to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia. No dosage adjustment is needed for patients with renal impairment. No dosage adjustment is needed for patients with mild to moderate hepatic impairment.
This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, it is not appropriate for patients allergic to the main component or other ingredients, patients with type 1 diabetes, or those experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis or coma. Additionally, patients with severe infections, or those who have undergone surgery, or patients with severe trauma may not be suitable for this medication. Caution should be exercised when administering this medication to patients with severe liver dysfunction or heart failure; it is particularly not recommended for patients with severe heart failure. Patients taking sulfonylureas or insulin should also be careful. Patients at risk of hypoglycemia, such as those with pituitary or adrenal insufficiency, patients with poor nutritional status or irregular eating habits, those engaging in vigorous exercise, or those who consume excessive alcohol should be monitored closely. Patients with a history of abdominal surgery or bowel obstruction or those at risk of QT interval prolongation should also be cautious while using this medication. This medication may pose a risk of acute pancreatitis; thus, if symptoms like severe abdominal pain or vomiting occur, immediate medical attention is necessary. During the use of this medication, symptoms of hypoglycemia may arise, requiring the intake of carbohydrate-containing foods or glucose as needed. Caution is particularly needed when this medication is used in conjunction with other antihyperglycemic agents, as the risk of hypoglycemia may increase. Liver dysfunction, interstitial pneumonia, skin rashes, or vesicular diseases may occur; therefore, immediate consultation with a physician is advised if symptoms appear. Use of this medication during pregnancy is not recommended, and caution should be exercised during breastfeeding. Safety has not been established in children, and for elderly patients, who may have diminished physiological function, administration should be conducted while observing their condition. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal removal of the medication and clinical monitoring such as ECG tests should be carried out, and supportive treatment should be provided if necessary. This medication may interact with certain drugs; thus, particular attention should be given to monitoring blood glucose and patient condition when used with CYP3A4 inhibitors or medications that alter blood glucose-lowering effects. Finally, while taking this medication, caution is needed for activities requiring attention, such as driving or working at heights, considering the risk of hypoglycemia.
