This medication is used as an adjunct to diet to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, while raising HDL cholesterol levels. It is effective in children aged 10 to 16 years with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, significantly reducing total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. It is particularly suitable for patients with high LDL cholesterol, a family history of early cardiovascular disease, or cardiovascular risk factors. This medication is utilized to improve lipid metabolism and support cardiovascular health.

How to take

Adult dose

For adults, the usual initial dose is 1 to 2 mg of pitavastatin calcium once daily. If the LDL cholesterol-lowering effect is insufficient, the dose can be increased up to a maximum of 4 mg per day. Dosage should be adjusted appropriately at intervals of 4 weeks or more based on LDL cholesterol levels, treatment goals, and patient response.

Child dose

For pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 16), take 1 mg of pitavastatin calcium once daily. If the LDL cholesterol-lowering effect is insufficient, a maximum of 2 mg per day can be administered.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by patients with allergies to specific components or with active liver disease. Patients with severely impaired liver function or bile flow problems should also not take this medication. Patients on cyclosporine, those with myopathy, pregnant or possibly pregnant women, and nursing mothers should refrain from taking this medication. It is also not administered to patients with genetic metabolic disorders such as lactose intolerance. Patients with renal dysfunction or liver impairment should use this medication cautiously, particularly if taken in conjunction with fibrates or niacin, as the risk of muscle damage may increase. Patients consuming excessive alcohol should exercise caution when taking this medication. Elderly patients, children, those with hypothyroidism, patients with genetic muscle disorders, and those with a history of drug-related muscle damage should also be carefully administered this medication. Possible side effects include myalgia, fatigue, abnormal liver function, skin rashes, and in severe cases, rhabdomyolysis may occur. If such symptoms occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. Before and during treatment, regular liver function tests should be conducted to assess liver health, and blood lipid levels should be periodically evaluated to assess treatment efficacy. This medication may interact with other drugs; therefore, caution is required when taken with cyclosporine, fibrates, niacin, and erythromycin. The risk of muscle damage or renal function deterioration may increase with concurrent use of these drugs, and it should be taken as prescribed by a physician. Elderly patients have decreased physical functions, so they need careful monitoring for potential side effects, and dosage adjustments may be necessary if adverse reactions occur. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, and women who may become pregnant should consult a physician before use. In children, this medication should only be administered under strict medical supervision for the treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia, with close monitoring of activity levels and muscle condition. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in its original container for safety.
