Improvement of type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control) and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is a treatment to help adults with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels effectively when used alongside dietary and exercise regimens. It can be administered alone but is typically used in combination with other diabetes medications, such as metformin, when blood sugar control is inadequate. For instance, if blood sugar control is insufficient with metformin monotherapy, this medication can be added to enhance therapeutic effects. Additionally, it may be used alongside insulin or other medications, with careful consideration for patients with cardiovascular disease. Overall, this drug plays a role in improving blood sugar regulation and assisting with diabetes management.
The recommended dosage of this medication is 10 mg once daily, whether used alone or in addition to insulin or other hypoglycemic agents. If tolerance is good and additional blood sugar control is needed, the dosage may be increased to 25 mg once daily. This drug can be taken regardless of meals, and the tablets should be swallowed whole. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered; do not double the next dose on the same day.
This drug should not be used in patients with allergic reactions to the active ingredient or any components. It should not be administered to patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. This medication is also contraindicated for patients with severely impaired kidney function or those on dialysis due to end-stage kidney disease. It contains lactose and should not be given to patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders. In patients with reduced kidney function, this drug should be used cautiously, and dosage adjustments or discontinuation may be required based on kidney function test results. There is limited experience with this drug in some heart failure patients, so it should be used carefully and is not recommended for those with severe heart failure. When used with other medications like insulin or sulfonylureas, monitoring is necessary for the risk of hypoglycemia, with possible dose adjustments required for these medications. During treatment with this drug, precautions should be taken for potential side effects such as hypoglycemia, urinary tract infections, genital fungal infections, and reduced fluid volume. Particularly, serious metabolic disturbances such as ketoacidosis can occur, and immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary upon symptom onset. Elderly patients or those at risk of fluid volume loss should be monitored closely for symptoms of hypotension or dehydration. This drug may have a mild effect on driving or operating machinery, so caution is advised in cases of high hypoglycemia risk. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised to avoid this medication, and treatment should be suspended upon confirmation of pregnancy. The safety and efficacy of this drug have not been established for children and adolescents under 18 years of age, hence it should not be used in this population. No specific toxic symptoms have been reported in cases of overdose, but immediate medical attention should be sought. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to prevent exposure to air or moisture, ideally at room temperature between 1 and 30 degrees Celsius. Proper storage will help maintain the medication's efficacy over time.
