Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone at the start of treatment and can be combined with metformin as needed. Additionally, for patients already on diabetes medications who struggle with sufficient blood sugar control, it can be used in conjunction with sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, insulin, and other medications. It aids in improving blood sugar control when added to various combination therapies. This medication is effectively used to improve blood sugar management in patients.
This medication is administered once daily at a dose of 100 mg, either as monotherapy or combination therapy, with a maximum daily dose of 100 mg. For patients with renal impairment, a dose of 50 mg is administered once daily for moderate renal impairment (glomerular filtration rate [eGFR] 30–45 mL/min/1.73 m2). This medication may cause serious allergic reactions in some patients, so if any symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or lips occur after taking the medication, it should be stopped immediately and medical advice should be sought. During treatment with this medication, pancreatitis may occur, so if symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or loss of appetite appear, the doctor should be informed immediately. Patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis should not use this medication, and it should also be avoided if there is an allergy to this medication or its components. Patients with reduced kidney function need dosage adjustment, so regular kidney function tests should be conducted and the medication should be taken under medical supervision. In clinical trials, patients taking this medication reported side effects such as nasopharyngitis, headache, and upper respiratory infections compared to placebo, and particularly when used with insulin or sulfonylureas, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase. When used with other hypoglycemic agents, there is a risk of hypoglycemia, so patients should be cognizant of hypoglycemic symptoms and should check their blood sugar levels frequently as needed. If serious joint pain or skin blisters appear, the use of this medication should be discontinued and medical personnel should be informed immediately. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised to avoid using this medication, and safety and efficacy have not been established in children and adolescents under the age of 18. In elderly patients, kidney function may decline, so kidney function should be assessed prior to use and the dosage adjusted accordingly. In case of overdose, general symptomatic treatment is provided, and blood dialysis may be performed to remove some of the medication as necessary.
