View approved original text

This medication is used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Initially, it may be administered alone in conjunction with diet and exercise therapy. However, if blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy, it is used in combination with metformin. Additionally, this medication can be added when blood sugar control is insufficient with other diabetes medications such as sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or insulin. It is effective in improving the management of patients' blood sugar with various methods of blood sugar control in combination.

Precautions

This medication may cause severe allergic reactions, so if symptoms such as skin rash or swelling occur, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor. During the use of this medication, symptoms of pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas, may appear; if abdominal pain or vomiting worsens, inform healthcare professionals immediately. It should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, nor should it be taken if there is an allergy to this medication or its components. Patients with reduced kidney function need to adjust the dosage of this medication, so appropriate dosing should be determined through renal function tests. Patients in clinical trials taking this medication experienced symptoms such as nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory infections, headaches, and diarrhea compared to a placebo, with an increased risk of hypoglycemia especially when taken with insulin or sulfonylureas. During the use of this medication, severe joint pain or the development of blisters on the skin may occur; if these symptoms appear, notify a doctor immediately. There is a risk of hypoglycemia when taking this medication with other hypoglycemic agents, so it may be necessary to adjust the doses of insulin or sulfonylureas. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid using this medication, and safety in pediatric patients under 18 years of age has not been established. Older adults may have decreased kidney function, so it is important to periodically monitor renal function before and during use. In cases of overdose, some drugs may be removed through hemodialysis, and general emergency treatment should be provided. No major interactions have been reported when this medication is taken with other medications; however, monitoring of blood concentration is necessary when taken with digoxin. If abnormal symptoms appear during the use of this medication, it is important to consult healthcare professionals immediately to receive appropriate action.
