This medication is used in conjunction with dietary therapy and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone, but when initial blood sugar control is difficult, it may be combined with metformin. Additionally, it can be administered in combination when there is insufficient effect from monotherapy with sulfonylurea, metformin, thiazolidinedione, or insulin. It also helps in cases where blood sugar control is challenging despite various medications. This medication is effective in improving blood sugar control.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is administered once daily at a dosage of 100 mg, either as monotherapy or in combination therapy, with a maximum daily dosage of 100 mg. It can be taken regardless of meals. Dosage adjustments are necessary based on kidney function. - Patients with mild to moderate renal impairment (eGFR ≥ 45 mL/min/1.73 m2) do not require dosage adjustments. - Patients with moderate renal impairment (eGFR ≥ 30 and < 45 mL/min/1.73 m2) require dosage adjustments.

Precautions

This medication may cause severe allergic reactions after administration; thus, if symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck develop, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor. Acute pancreatitis, a serious inflammation of the pancreas, may occur. If symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or severe abdominal discomfort appear, seek medical attention immediately. This medication should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Patients who have had an allergic reaction to this medication or its components should avoid its use. Patients with reduced kidney function may experience slower excretion of this medication, and dosage adjustment should be made according to a doctor's guidance with regular kidney function tests. Commonly reported side effects in clinical trials include upper respiratory tract infections, nasopharyngitis, headaches, and diarrhea. Hypoglycemic symptoms may also occur, so blood sugar management should be carefully monitored. When taken with insulin or sulfonylurea, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase, requiring dosage adjustments of these medications. Severe joint pain may occur; consider consulting a doctor about discontinuing medication if joint pain worsens. If symptoms such as skin blisters or ulceration appear, notify a doctor immediately for appropriate diagnosis and treatment. The safety of this medication in pregnant women has not been established, so its use is not recommended. Nursing mothers are also advised not to take this medication. Safety has not been confirmed in children and adolescents, so it should not be used in patients under 18 years of age. Elderly patients may have a risk of reduced kidney function, so dosage adjustment and monitoring of kidney function are necessary.
