Improvement of cholesterol and lipid levels in hypercholesterolemia (primary, homozygous familial) and dyslipidemia
This medication helps to lower elevated total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL-cholesterol levels while raising HDL-cholesterol in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It can effectively manage blood cholesterol levels in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when used alone or in combination with other therapies. This medication is particularly useful when dietary adjustments and non-drug treatments are insufficient and improves health by managing lipids in patients at high risk of vascular disease. It is important to identify secondary causes like diabetes and hypothyroidism before treatment and take necessary measures. Regular tests of lipid levels can enable treatment safely and effectively. This medication is used to improve health problems associated with hypercholesterolemia.
This medication is administered once daily, regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, the dosage ranges from 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg daily, with an initial recommended dose of 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg daily. If a greater reduction in LDL-cholesterol is required, an initial dose of 10/40 mg daily is recommended. Blood lipid levels should be checked at intervals of more than 2 weeks after starting therapy or making dose adjustments.
This medication can cause serious muscle problems, so patients should notify their physician immediately if symptoms like muscle pain, cramps, or weakness occur. Especially in cases of impaired kidney function, severe infections, major surgeries, or trauma, it may be necessary to temporarily discontinue or halt this medication. Patients allergic to the ingredients or with severely impaired liver function, those with muscle diseases, pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication. Patients with certain liver diseases or significantly elevated liver enzyme levels should also avoid using this medication. Caution is advised for patients with a history of alcohol addiction or liver disease, impaired kidney function, hypothyroidism, or elderly patients, as they are at higher risk for muscle problems. As this medication can interact with others, especially those affecting liver metabolism or muscles, patients should consult their physician when taking other medications. Liver function abnormalities can occur, so routine checks of liver function test results are necessary, and if symptoms of liver damage arise, use should be discontinued immediately. Blood sugar levels may increase during the use of this medication, and patients at risk for diabetes should monitor their blood sugar regularly. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should employ adequate contraception while taking this medication and discontinue use immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. It is also advisable for nursing women to avoid this medication, as there is a possibility it may be excreted in breast milk. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur, so caution is necessary when driving or operating machinery. The safety and effectiveness of this medication have not been established in children, so it is not recommended. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so symptomatic treatment and supportive care should be pursued, along with monitoring liver function and muscle enzyme levels.
