View approved original text

This medication helps to lower elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, particularly in heterozygous familial and non-familial patients, while increasing the levels of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol). Furthermore, it can be used as an adjunct therapy in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when other treatments are insufficient. This medication is effectively used to reduce the risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease caused by dyslipidemia and should be taken in conjunction with an appropriate diet. Before using, it is necessary to identify and treat secondary causes such as diabetes or hypothyroidism, and regular lipid checks are recommended. This medication is suitable for patients with dyslipidemia who do not respond adequately to dietary and non-pharmacological treatments and is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

This medication is administered once daily, regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, the dosage range is from 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg per day, with an initial dose of 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg recommended. For patients requiring a more significant reduction in LDL cholesterol, an initial dose of 10/40 mg per day is recommended. After starting treatment or adjusting the dose, lipid levels should be checked after an interval of more than 2 weeks.

Precautions

This medication can, in rare cases, cause rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to serious kidney problems due to muscle tissue damage. Therefore, if severe muscle pain or muscle weakness occurs, it is essential to inform a doctor immediately and discontinue treatment. Additionally, if there are risk factors such as severe infections, hypotension, major surgery, trauma, metabolic disorders, or seizures, the use of this medication may need to be temporarily suspended. This medication should not be administered to patients with specific allergic reactions, liver disease, muscle disorders, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, nursing mothers, and those on certain other medications. Patients with diminished liver function, those with alcohol addiction, the elderly, and patients with weak kidney function need to be particularly cautious when using this medication, and patients at high risk of myopathy or rhabdomyolysis should check muscle enzyme levels before treatment and monitor them regularly. This medication can affect liver function, so routine liver function tests should be performed before starting and during treatment, and if symptoms of liver dysfunction (e.g., nausea, vomiting, fatigue) occur, a doctor should be notified immediately. This medication may increase blood sugar levels, but since its effect on reducing cardiovascular disease risk is greater, blood sugar management remains necessary. Dizziness may occur when driving or operating machinery, so caution is needed. Additionally, this medication can interact with several others, so anyone taking other medications should inform their doctor or pharmacist, especially when considering concurrent use with certain antibiotics, antiviral agents, antifungal agents, immunosuppressants, or fibrate drugs. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication, and women of childbearing potential should use appropriate contraception during treatment. Safety in children has not been established, so it is generally not recommended. In the case of overdose, there are no specific antidotes, and treatment should be supportive based on symptoms while periodically checking liver function and muscle enzyme levels.
