Reduction of cholesterol in hypercholesterolemia (primary, homozygous familial) and dyslipidemia, improving lipids through cholesterol reduction and increase in HDL.
This drug is used as an adjunct to diet in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels, while increasing HDL cholesterol, known as good cholesterol. In patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, it is used alone or in combination with other lipid-lowering treatments to control cholesterol levels in the blood. This drug is applicable in the treatment of dyslipidemia patients at high risk for cardiovascular disease and must be used with appropriate dietary measures to be effective. It is also important to administer this drug after confirming the influence of other diseases or medications on lipid levels, alongside measurement of blood lipid levels. This drug is administered once daily regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, it is administered within a dosage range of 10/10 mg to 10/80 mg daily, with an initial recommended dose of 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg. For patients requiring a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol (more than 55%), an initial dose of 10/40 mg daily is recommended. Individuals with a history of alcohol addiction, liver disease, impaired kidney function, hypothyroidism, those with a family history or previous experience of muscle toxicity, or elderly individuals aged 70 and above, who are at greater risk of myopathy should use this drug with caution. Side effects such as muscle pain, abdominal pain, and liver function abnormalities may occur during the use of this drug, so consultation with a physician is necessary if symptoms persist or worsen. It is important to conduct liver function tests before starting this medication and to regularly monitor liver function during treatment. If liver function worsens, the use of this drug should be discontinued. This drug should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and fertile women should use appropriate contraceptive methods. There may be interactions with other medications, so it is essential to inform healthcare professionals of any current medications being taken. Caution is particularly needed when used in conjunction with certain antibiotics, antivirals, cyclosporine, or fibrate class drugs. Symptoms such as dizziness or muscle pain may occur, thus care should be taken during driving or operating machinery. Elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function may need a dosage adjustment, and consultation with a physician is essential before taking this drug. In case of overdose, since there is no specific antidote, treatment and supportive therapy according to symptoms are needed, and monitoring of liver function and muscle enzyme levels is necessary.
