This medication helps reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, while increasing HDL cholesterol. Additionally, it can be used as an adjunct therapy when other lipid-lowering treatments are ineffective for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. This drug is used in conjunction with a diet, and appropriate dietary management including restrictions on saturated fats and cholesterol should be prioritized. It is important to identify and treat other causes of dyslipidemia, such as diabetes or hypothyroidism, if necessary. Cholesterol and lipid tests should be conducted before and during therapy to monitor the condition, and it should be used in high-risk patients considering multiple risk factors. This medication is used to improve blood lipid levels in the treatment of dyslipidemia, thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Precautions

This medication has been reported to cause a serious side effect known as rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to acute kidney dysfunction due to rare muscle tissue damage. Therefore, patients at high risk for muscle damage, such as those with severe infections, low blood pressure, major surgery, trauma, severe metabolic disorders, or uncontrolled seizures, should temporarily discontinue or avoid this medication. Patients with an allergy to the ingredients of this drug, active liver disease, or persistent elevation of liver enzymes of unknown cause, patients with muscular disorders, pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients taking certain antiviral medications, and patients with lactose intolerance should not take this drug. Patients with alcohol use disorder, moderate to severe liver dysfunction, kidney dysfunction, hypothyroidism, a history of myopathy, and the elderly, who are at higher risk of muscle damage, should use this medication with caution. This drug contains yellow pigment, and patients with allergies to it should be cautious. If muscle pain, muscle weakness, fatigue, or muscle pain accompanied by fever occur during treatment, medical attention should be sought immediately, and blood tests may be required to check for muscle damage. Since liver dysfunction may occur, liver function tests should be done regularly before and during administration, and if symptoms of hepatitis or jaundice appear, the drug should be discontinued immediately. This medication may increase blood sugar levels, but since its cardiovascular disease prevention benefits are greater, blood sugar management should be continued. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid taking this drug, and if pregnancy is confirmed during treatment, it should be discontinued immediately, and nursing mothers should also refrain from taking it. Symptoms such as dizziness may occur, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. Additionally, this drug may interact with multiple medications, so patients taking other drugs should consult their doctor or pharmacist, especially when used in combination with certain antibiotics, antivirals, immunosuppressants, and fibrates, as this can increase the risk of muscle damage. In case of overdose, as there is no specific antidote, appropriate treatment and supportive care should be provided based on symptoms, while carefully monitoring liver function and muscle damage. This medication has not been established as safe for use in children and is not recommended, and it should be used cautiously in the elderly due to the risk of muscle damage. During the use of this medication, it is crucial to be vigilant about any symptoms of muscle pain or weakness and liver function abnormalities.
