Reduction of cholesterol in hypercholesterolemia (primary, homozygous familial) and improvement of lipids by increasing HDL.
This medication helps patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia to lower total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL-cholesterol levels, while raising HDL-cholesterol levels. It is also used as an adjunctive treatment for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when other therapies do not work effectively. This medication is recommended when there is a lack of response to non-pharmacological treatments such as dietary modifications that limit saturated fat and cholesterol intake. Before administration, secondary causes such as diabetes and hypothyroidism should be identified and treated if necessary. Measurement and management of lipid levels are crucial, and accurate assessment of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels is essential. This medication is used to reduce the risk of atherosclerotic vascular diseases caused by hypercholesterolemia.
This medication should be taken once daily without regard to meals. 1. Primary Hypercholesterolemia The dosage range is 10/10mg to 10/80mg per day. The initial recommended dose is either 10/10mg or 10/20mg once daily. In patients where a greater reduction in LDL-cholesterol (more than 55%) is required, the initial recommended dose is 10/40mg once daily. After starting this medication or adjusting the dose, lipid levels should be checked at intervals of at least two weeks.
This medication may rarely cause a condition called rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to severe muscle damage. Consequently, patients exhibiting severe myopathy symptoms or those with renal function issues should stop or discontinue taking this medication. Patients with allergies to this medication's active or inactive ingredients, patients with active liver disease, muscle-related disorders, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and those taking certain antiviral medications should not use this medication. Additionally, it is not suitable for patients with lactose intolerance. Caution should be exercised in alcoholics, patients with liver dysfunction, those with decreased renal function, patients with hypothyroidism, individuals with a history of muscle disorders, or elderly patients who are at high risk for myopathy. Care is especially needed when used in conjunction with fibrate drugs. While taking this medication, side effects such as myalgia, abdominal pain, and increased liver enzyme levels may occur, and in severe cases, discontinuation of use may be required. If symptoms indicating liver dysfunction or muscle-related issues arise, immediate medical consultation is necessary. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, and women of childbearing age should use appropriate contraceptive methods. This medication has not established safety and efficacy in pediatric patients, and is not recommended for children. Elderly patients are at a higher risk of myopathy, hence caution is necessary, although dosage adjustment is generally not required. Patients with liver or renal function issues should consult a physician before taking this medication, and those with severely impaired liver function should not take it. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote; thus, appropriate symptomatic treatment and supportive care should be implemented, along with regular monitoring of liver function and muscle enzyme levels. This medication may interact with other drugs, so it is crucial to consult with a physician or pharmacist when taking medications that affect liver metabolism or may impact muscles. While taking this medication, dizziness or other symptoms may occur while driving or operating machinery, so caution is advised.
