This medication helps lower total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, Apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL-cholesterol levels, and increase HDL-cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia, and it is used as an adjunct to diet. Additionally, it is indicated as an adjunct treatment for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when other treatments are insufficient. Before taking this medication, secondary causes such as diabetes or hypothyroidism should be evaluated and treated if necessary. Lipid tests should include total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides, with additional testing required if triglycerides are significantly elevated. For patients with acute coronary events, lipid levels should be measured upon hospitalization and LDL-lowering treatment should be initiated at discharge. This medication is effective in improving blood lipid levels when used alongside proper lifestyle habits.

Precautions

This medication carries a risk of serious muscle problems, so if severe muscle pain or weakness occurs suddenly, the patient should inform their doctor immediately. Especially if there are conditions such as severe infections, major surgery, trauma, or severe metabolic abnormalities or electrolyte imbalances, this medication may need to be temporarily discontinued. Women who are pregnant or nursing, or individuals with known allergies to any of its components, severe liver dysfunction, or muscle diseases should not use this medication. Also, patients with certain liver diseases or abnormally high serum liver enzyme levels should not be administered this medication. Patients with a history of alcohol abuse or liver disease, those with impaired kidney function or a history of hypothyroidism or muscle disease should use this medication with caution. Elderly patients over 70 years old are also at a higher risk for muscle-related issues, so caution is advised. Moreover, patients taking fibrate class medications should be careful as well. Regular liver function tests should be performed during treatment with this medication, and if any symptoms of liver dysfunction appear, treatment should be stopped immediately. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should use appropriate contraceptive methods, and if pregnancy is confirmed, this medication should be discontinued immediately. While elderly patients are at a higher risk for muscle-related problems and should exercise caution during use, dosage adjustment is not strictly necessary. Patients with impaired kidney function should be closely monitored for the risk of muscle issues. When taking this medication with other drugs, the risk of side effects may increase due to interactions, particularly with medications metabolized in the liver or those that can affect muscles, so patients should consult their doctor beforehand. Patients may experience dizziness, muscle pain, or abdominal pain during treatment, and caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, and appropriate care and supportive treatment should be sought based on symptoms, while monitoring liver function and muscle damage.
