This medication is used for effectively controlling blood glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone or in combination with other diabetes medications such as metformin, sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or insulin as needed. Combination therapy is particularly recommended for patients with no prior experience of diabetes medication treatment or who have difficulty achieving sufficient blood glucose control with monotherapy. It enhances therapeutic effects when used additionally in patients who have difficulty controlling blood glucose with various combination therapies. This treatment helps improve blood glucose control and assists in managing diabetes.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is administered 100 mg once daily in monotherapy or combination therapy, with a maximum daily dosage of 100 mg. It can be taken regardless of meals. For patients with renal impairment, adjustments are not required for mild to moderate renal impairment (estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR] 45 or greater but less than 90). For moderate renal impairment with eGFR between 30 and 45, administer 50 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication may cause severe allergic reactions in some patients; if skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck occurs, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. While taking this medication, serious pancreatic inflammation known as pancreatitis may occur; if abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting occurs, visit a hospital immediately. Patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis should not use this medication, and patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or its components should also refrain from use. Patients with impaired kidney function need to have their dosage adjusted, so regular kidney function tests should be conducted, and the medication should be taken as directed by a physician. Taking this medication with other blood glucose-lowering agents may increase the risk of hypoglycemia, so caution is advised regarding hypoglycemia symptoms when used in combination with insulin or sulfonylureas, and dosage adjustments may be necessary. While taking this medication, side effects such as headache, upper respiratory infection, nasopharyngitis, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may occur; if symptoms are severe or persistent, consult healthcare providers. If severe joint pain or blistering skin disorders occur, stop taking the medication immediately and consult a doctor. It is advisable for pregnant or breastfeeding women to avoid using this medication, and safety and efficacy have not been established in children or adolescents under 18 years of age. Elderly patients may risk impaired kidney function, thus kidney function should be monitored before and after taking this medication to ensure caution. In case of overdose, visit a medical facility immediately for appropriate treatment, and this medication can be partially removed via hemodialysis. This medication has minimal drug interactions, but caution is necessary when used with specific medications, so it's important to inform the doctor or pharmacist of any other medications being taken.
