Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise therapy to help control blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone when starting diabetes treatment for the first time. However, if blood glucose control is insufficient with monotherapy, it can be combined with metformin. Additionally, it can also be used in combination for patients who find it difficult to control blood glucose with any single-agent therapy, such as sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or insulin. In cases where combination therapy also fails to achieve adequate blood glucose control, this drug can be added to therapies combining sulfonylureas with metformin, thiazolidinediones with metformin, or insulin with metformin. It is effectively used in various situations to improve blood glucose control.
The recommended dose for this medication is 100 mg once daily, whether used alone or in combination, with a maximum daily dose of 100 mg. It can be taken irrespective of meals. For patients with renal impairment, the following dosage adjustments are recommended: 1. Mild renal impairment (eGFR 60 to less than 90) does not require dosage adjustment. 2. Moderate renal impairment (eGFR 45 to less than 60) does not require dosage adjustment. 3. Moderate renal impairment (eGFR 30 to 45) requires a dosage of 50 mg once daily.

Patients with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or a hypersensitivity to this drug or its components should not take this medication. Patients with reduced kidney function may need to adjust dosages, and regular kidney function tests before and during treatment are advisable. In clinical trials, the incidence of hypoglycemia with this drug was similar to or slightly higher than that with placebo when used alone or in combination with other diabetes medications. Care should be taken especially when taken with insulin or sulfonylureas, as there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia. While taking this medication, side effects such as upper respiratory infections, nasopharyngitis, headaches, diarrhea, dyspepsia, etc., may occur. Severe joint pain or blistering skin conditions may occur, so it is necessary to notify a doctor immediately if these symptoms arise, and the medication should be discontinued if needed.
