Improvement of hypercholesterolemia (primary, mixed) and treatment of dyslipidemia (reduction of total cholesterol, LDL-C)
This drug is used as an adjunct to diet to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia while increasing HDL cholesterol. It is primarily used in conjunction with a diet that includes restrictions on saturated fats and cholesterol intake and is applied when diet alone is insufficient. It is administered for lipid control in patients at high risk of cardiovascular disease, but other risk factors must be considered. Prior to administration, it is important to check for other secondary causes of dyslipidemia and treat if necessary, and it is essential to closely monitor the condition through lipid tests. This drug can only be used for certain types of dyslipidemia, and its superior efficacy over atorvastatin has not been established. Therefore, it is recommended to follow the guidance of professionals for safe and effective treatment.
This drug is taken once daily regardless of meals. The dosage range is 10/10 mg to 10/40 mg per day. A starting dose of 10/10 mg or 10/20 mg per day is recommended. For patients requiring greater LDL cholesterol reduction, the dose can be adjusted. After starting therapy or adjusting the dose, blood lipid levels should be checked at intervals of more than 2 weeks before making further adjustments.
This drug has been reported to cause a rare side effect called rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to serious muscle damage. Patients with severe infections, hypotension, major surgeries or trauma, metabolic and electrolyte disorders should temporarily suspend or discontinue the use of this drug. This drug should not be administered to certain patients. For example, those who are allergic to its components, have severe liver dysfunction, muscle diseases, are pregnant or nursing mothers, or are taking certain antiviral drugs. Additionally, patients with genetic issues such as lactose intolerance should not take this drug. Patients with a history of liver disease or alcoholics, patients with decreased kidney function, hypothyroidism, the elderly, and those at high risk of muscle damage should use this drug cautiously. Caution is also necessary when taking fibrate class drugs concurrently. During the use of this drug, side effects such as abnormal liver function, muscle pain, fatigue, headache, dizziness, dyspepsia, hypertension, and diabetes may occur. In severe cases, hepatitis, muscle rupture, and serious skin reactions can occur, so immediate consultation with a doctor is advised if symptoms appear. If muscle-related abnormal symptoms occur, blood tests should be done to check for the extent of muscle damage, and in severe cases, medication should be discontinued. Rapid notification to medical personnel is essential if accompanied by muscle pain, muscle weakness, malaise, or fever. Liver function tests should be performed before starting treatment and regularly during treatment, and if liver values increase significantly, dosage may be reduced or discontinued. Women who are pregnant or potentially pregnant should not take this drug, and women of childbearing age should use appropriate contraception while taking this drug. It is also safer not to use this drug during breastfeeding. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children, so it is not recommended for their use. Caution is needed in the elderly due to the higher risk of muscle abnormalities, but no separate dosage adjustment is necessary. There are many interactions with other drugs, so the dosage adjustment or use of this drug should be decided based on the concomitant medications. Special caution is required when co-administered with drugs that affect liver metabolism or increase the risk of muscle damage. In the case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so treatment should be symptomatic, and liver function and muscle damage should be monitored.
