Improvement of selenium deficiency
This medication is used as a supplement to improve selenium deficiency in patients where dietary intake alone is insufficient.
Administer 100 μg of selenium daily by intramuscular or intravenous injection. If necessary, the dose can be increased to 200 μg daily. When administered as an additional dose to basic total parenteral nutrition (TPN), the daily dose should be 100 μg of selenium.
This medication contains selenium, so it should not be used in patients with selenium toxicity. It should not be administered to patients with allergic reactions to this drug or its components. When administering this medication, pain or allergic reactions may rarely occur, so caution is necessary. If symptoms such as dermatitis, foul odor when sweating or breathing, hair loss, agitation, or vomiting occur after administration, use should be immediately discontinued. Care should be taken to avoid precipitation when mixing with other intravenous infusion fluids, and the acidity (pH) of the solution should not be too low or used with reducing agents like vitamin C, as this may precipitate selenium, which can be poorly absorbed by the body. When mixed with other medications, if any precipitation or color change occurs, it should be avoided. This medication contains sodium, so patients requiring a low-sodium diet should take this into account. It should be administered cautiously in pregnant women or women of childbearing age if the benefits outweigh the risks. The safety of this drug has not been established in breastfeeding women, so it is advisable to either discontinue breastfeeding or the medication during lactation. In case of overdose, symptoms may include a garlic odor from the mouth, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, which can affect the growth of nails and hair and may lead to neurological disorders in the long term. In cases of overdose, measures such as gastric lavage, inducing urination, or administering high-dose vitamin C should be taken, and in very severe cases, dialysis may be required. This medication should not be used with drugs like dimercaprol as it may exacerbate selenium toxicity. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should be stored in a sealed container in a dark, dry place at room temperature. It should be used immediately after opening, and transferring it to another container may cause accidents or deterioration in quality, so caution is advised.
