Treatment of essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used to control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. Additionally, it helps lower the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death due to cardiovascular diseases in patients over 55 years of age at high risk and unable to use ACE inhibitors. Such patients include those with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, or transient ischemic attacks, as well as those with evidence of end-organ damage associated with high-risk diabetes. Thus, this medication is effective not only for the treatment of hypertension but also for the prevention of major cardiovascular events. Therefore, it is used to protect patients' cardiovascular health and stabilize blood pressure.
Adults: Take 40 mg of Telmisartan orally once daily with water, regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may also be effective, and can be increased to 80 mg once daily if necessary. The maximum blood pressure-lowering effect is evident 4 to 8 weeks after treatment initiation. For reducing cardiovascular disease risk, 80 mg is recommended to be taken orally once daily

Particularly in diabetes patients, hypoglycemic symptoms may occur, so careful observation is required, and if symptoms of angioedema occur, the medication should be stopped immediately and appropriate treatment sought. It is important to regularly monitor renal function and periodically check potassium and creatinine levels while on this medication. Patients with decreased blood volume or sodium are at risk of hypotension, and corrective measures should be taken before starting treatment; if symptoms of hypotension appear, immediate appropriate action is necessary. Caution is needed when this drug is taken with other antihypertensive medications, as it may enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect. Also, interactions may occur when taken with certain medications, so inform healthcare professionals of any other medications being taken. The safety and efficacy of this drug have not been established in children under 18 years old, so it is advisable not to use it in this population.
