View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be administered alone and may be used in combination with metformin in cases where patients have never received diabetes medication or where blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy. Additionally, this medication can be added when sufficient blood sugar control is not achieved with monotherapy of sulfonylureas, metformin, thiazolidinediones, or insulin. In cases where blood sugar control is challenging even with concurrent therapies of multiple medications, this drug can also enhance the effect. It is utilized in various therapeutic situations to improve blood sugar control.

Precautions

This medication can cause rare but serious allergic reactions; therefore, if skin rash, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or neck appear within three months after administration, use should be discontinued immediately, and a doctor consulted. It may cause inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis); if severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or fever occur, the medication should be discontinued immediately, and medical attention sought. This medication should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, nor in those allergic to the drug or its components. In patients with impaired kidney function, the dose of this medication needs to be adjusted, and it should be taken only under the guidance of a physician. During treatment, symptoms of hypoglycemia may occur; hence, blood sugar levels should be monitored closely, especially when used in conjunction with insulin or sulfonylureas. While taking this medication, headaches, upper respiratory infections, nasopharyngitis, diarrhea, nausea, and other symptoms may occur; if symptoms persist or worsen, consultation with healthcare professionals is advised. If symptoms such as severe joint pain or blistering of the skin occur, the medication should be discontinued immediately and a specialist consulted. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to use this medication, and its safety and efficacy have not been established for children or adolescents under 18 years of age. In case of overdose, general symptomatic treatment should be conducted, with blood dialysis available to remove some of the drug if necessary, so patients should promptly seek medical attention in emergencies.
