Improvement of blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is initially administered alone but may be combined with other diabetes medications when adequate blood glucose control cannot be achieved with monotherapy alone. For example, it can be used in combination with medications like metformin, sulfonylureas, insulin, and sitagliptin. This combination therapy helps improve blood glucose control, enhancing the patient's health. It is used appropriately according to the individual treatment situation to assist in managing blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes. In other words, this drug improves blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
The recommended dose for this medication is 10 mg once daily for monotherapy and additional combination therapy with other antidiabetic medications like insulin. For initial combination therapy with metformin, the dose is 5 mg or 10 mg once daily. For special populations, patients with severe liver impairment are recommended to start with a dose of 5 mg, which can be increased to 10 mg if tolerated well. This medication should not be used in certain patients. For instance, individuals who are allergic to the main ingredient or excipients of this drug, patients with type 1 diabetes, those with diabetic ketoacidosis, and individuals with lactose intolerance or certain genetic issues should not take this medication. Additionally, patients undergoing dialysis should not use this drug. Patients with fluid depletion or impaired kidney function should exercise caution when using this drug. This medication can cause blood pressure drops or changes in kidney function; therefore, it is essential to closely monitor fluid status and kidney function before and after administration. Particularly, elderly patients or those taking diuretics require more careful observation. This medication contains yellow dye, so patients allergic to or experiencing hypersensitivity to this component should also be cautious. The most common side effect that may occur during the use of this drug is genital infections. Other reported side effects include urinary tract infections, hypoglycemia, fluid volume reduction, diabetic ketoacidosis, and kidney function abnormalities. If side effects are suspected, immediate consultation with medical personnel is necessary. Serious side effects could include the rare occurrence of severe infections such as gangrene of the perineum (Fournier's gangrene), so if pain, swelling, or redness occurs in the genital or perineal areas, prompt medical attention should be sought. Pregnant or nursing women are advised not to use this medication, and if pregnancy is confirmed, the medication should be discontinued immediately. When used in combination with insulin or sulfonylureas, this drug can increase the risk of hypoglycemia, so in such cases, dosage adjustments of insulin or the respective medication may be necessary. Furthermore, this drug may have weight-reducing effects; thus, careful monitoring of weight changes is advised. There is no specific antidote in case of overdose, so appropriate treatment should be administered based on symptoms. Finally, routine checks on blood glucose levels should be performed while taking this medication, and caution regarding hypoglycemia symptoms should be maintained when driving or operating machinery. This medication should be taken strictly according to a physician's prescription and guidance, and any abnormal symptoms should be promptly discussed with a specialist.
