Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can also be administered as monotherapy, and in cases where blood sugar control is difficult, it can be combined with medications such as metformin, sulfonylureas, insulin, or sitagliptin. Such combination therapy is applicable when sufficient blood sugar control has not been achieved with various diabetes drug therapies. Therefore, this medication is used to effectively assist in blood sugar management for patients with type 2 diabetes.
The recommended dosage of this medication is 10 mg once daily for monotherapy and as an adjunct to other blood sugar-lowering agents such as insulin. In initial combination therapy, if there has been no previous experience with diabetes medication, the combination with metformin should be 5 mg or 10 mg once daily. This medication can be taken orally once a day at any time of the day, regardless of food intake, and the tablet should be swallowed whole.
The efficacy and safety of this medication in children under 18 years of age have not been established; therefore, it is not administered.
This medication should not be used by patients who are allergic to the active ingredient or excipients. Patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis should not take this medication. Patients with genetic lactose intolerance should not use this medication due to the anhydrous lactose contained in it. Patients undergoing renal dialysis should also not take this medication. Patients with decreased fluid volume or renal function problems should use this medication with caution. This medication can lower blood pressure and may pose a risk of rapid deterioration of renal function; therefore, fluid status and renal function should be closely monitored before and after administration. In particular, patients with moderate to severe impairment of renal function may experience reduced efficacy for blood sugar control. Common side effects while taking this medication include genital infections, which occur more frequently in women. Other reported side effects include urinary tract infection, hypoglycemia, reduced fluid volume, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, and back pain, among others. A serious metabolic abnormality known as diabetic ketoacidosis may occur, and if symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, or difficulty breathing appear, immediate consultation with medical personnel is required. While this medication helps control blood sugar, it may increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with medications such as insulin or sulfonylureas. Therefore, dosage adjustments may be necessary. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use this medication, and if pregnancy is confirmed, they should stop taking it immediately. Elderly patients or those with impaired renal function are at higher risk of side effects and should be monitored closely, with regular renal function tests recommended. This medication may cause positive results in urinary glucose tests; therefore, it is advisable to use other tests when assessing blood sugar control. In the event of an overdose, there are no specific antidotes; treatment should be symptomatic, and proper measures should be taken according to medical personnel's instructions if required. During the use of this medication, fluid status should be carefully managed, and symptoms of infection or hypoglycemia should be monitored, with immediate consultation with a physician if abnormalities occur.
