Improvement of lipid levels in hypercholesterolemia (primary, mixed type) and suppression of the risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease.
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B protein, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia, while raising HDL cholesterol levels. It is particularly applied to patients at increased risk of atherosclerotic vascular diseases in conjunction with lipid-lowering medications, and it is used when the response to dietary measures (restricting saturated fats and cholesterol) and non-drug interventions is insufficient. Before administration, it is essential to check for other secondary causes of dyslipidemia, such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, etc., and treat them if necessary. Lipid tests should include total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglycerides, and particularly if triglyceride levels are high, additional testing may be required. In patients with acute coronary events, lipid levels should be measured at admission or within 24 hours, and guidance on initiating LDL-lowering treatment prior to discharge should be referenced. This medication is effective in improving dyslipidemia.
This medication is taken once daily regardless of meals. For primary hypercholesterolemia, it is started at 10/5 mg once daily, and the dosage can be adjusted after checking lipid levels at intervals of 4 weeks or more, if necessary. The maximum dosage is 10/20 mg per day.
This medication can rarely cause rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to serious kidney problems by damaging muscle tissue. Particularly, patients with compromised kidney function due to acute infections, hypotension, major surgery, trauma, metabolic abnormalities, seizures, etc., should pause or discontinue taking this medication. Individuals allergic to the active or inactive ingredients of this medication, those with severely impaired liver function, muscle disorders, those taking certain immunosuppressants, individuals with severe kidney impairment, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication. Those at high risk for myopathy or rhabdomyolysis, for example, individuals with compromised kidney function, those with hypothyroidism, those with a family history of muscle disorders, those with a history of muscle toxicity from other statins or fibrate medications, alcoholics, and Asian patients should take this medication with caution. This medication contains lactose, so individuals with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic disorders should avoid taking it. If muscle pain, muscle cramps, muscle weakness, fatigue, fever, etc., occur during the course of this medication, the patient must immediately inform a doctor and undergo examination, and in some cases, the medication may need to be discontinued. Liver function abnormalities may occur, so regular liver function tests should be conducted before and during use, and if liver enzyme levels are abnormally high, dose adjustment or discontinuation may be necessary. This medication may slightly elevate blood sugar levels, so patients at risk of diabetes must manage their blood sugar carefully. There may be interactions with other medications, so particularly if taking anticoagulants, fibrate medications, certain antibiotics, antifungals, or immunosuppressants, consult with a doctor or pharmacist. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant must meticulously practice contraception while taking this medication, and if pregnancy is confirmed, they must immediately discontinue use. Breastfeeding women are also advised to avoid taking this medication and should consult with a doctor if necessary. Safety in children and adolescents has not been adequately established, so it is advised not to use it except in special cases. Elderly patients are at higher risk for myopathy and should take caution with use, although dose adjustments are generally not necessary. In the case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so appropriate treatment based on symptoms and testing of liver function and muscle enzymes should be performed.
