Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Patients can take this medication along with dietary changes and exercise to manage blood sugar more effectively. It can be taken alone, and in cases where previous diabetes medications have been used or monotherapy is insufficient, it can be administered in combination with other medications, including metformin. Additionally, when various combinations of medications such as sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, and insulin do not achieve adequate blood sugar control, this medication can be added to improve blood sugar regulation. Overall, this medication is effective in enhancing blood sugar control in various therapeutic settings.
This medication is administered as a single therapy or in combination therapy at a dose of 100 mg once daily, with a maximum daily dose of 100 mg. It can be taken regardless of meals. In cases of renal impairment, dose adjustments are necessary based on kidney function. For mild to moderate renal impairment (eGFR 45 to less than 90), no dose adjustment is required. However, for those with a glomerular filtration rate of 30 to less than 45, a dose of 50 mg once daily is recommended.
This medication may rarely cause serious allergic reactions, so if symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck occur after taking the medication, it should be stopped immediately, and medical attention should be sought. During the use of this medication, acute pancreatitis may occur, marked by symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting; if these symptoms arise, it is crucial to visit a hospital promptly. This medication should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, nor in patients who have had severe allergic reactions to this medication or its components. Patients with impaired kidney function may need dosage adjustments, thus regular renal function tests are advisable, and the medication should be taken according to a doctor's instructions. Cold-like symptoms or headache, dyspepsia, and diarrhea may occur during the use of this medication, and if these symptoms are severe, it is recommended to consult a doctor. Using this medication in conjunction with other hypoglycemic agents or insulin may lead to hypoglycemic symptoms; thus, frequent blood sugar monitoring is necessary, and any hypoglycemic symptoms should be addressed immediately. Severe joint pain or skin conditions such as bullous pemphigoid may occur, and immediate notification to a physician is warranted if such symptoms appear. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to use this medication, and safety and efficacy in children under 18 years have not been confirmed. Elderly patients may experience decreased renal function, thus regular monitoring of kidney function before and after taking this medication is essential. In case of overdose, standard emergency measures should be taken, and if necessary, blood dialysis can be used to remove the medication, so visit a medical institution immediately. This medication does not have major interactions with other medications, but caution is needed when taking certain medications, so always inform your doctor or pharmacist of all medications being taken.
