Additionally, it can be used to treat chickenpox in children over 2 years of age. This is a medication that is broadly helpful for treating various viral infections.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with known allergies to this drug or its components. Patients with impaired kidney function are at risk of experiencing neurological reactions while using this drug, so caution is necessary. Patients with impaired liver function should also use this drug cautiously as liver function may worsen with its use. Extra caution is advised when administering this drug to infants and young children, using the minimum effective dose when necessary. Elderly patients often have decreased kidney function, which may increase the concentration of this drug, so dosage and administration intervals should be adjusted accordingly. Rarely, this drug may cause serious allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock; if symptoms such as low blood pressure, breathing difficulties, or chest tightness occur, administration should be stopped immediately and appropriate treatment should be sought. Skin reactions such as photosensitivity, rashes, fever, vesicles, or hives may develop, and if these occur, the medication should be discontinued, and a doctor consulted. Rarely, severe skin disorders such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis may occur, so skin condition should be carefully monitored. Neurological symptoms may include altered consciousness, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, drowsiness, and anxiety, particularly in elderly patients or those with kidney impairment. Signs of impaired kidney function may include renal failure, hematuria, or proteinuria; kidney function should be regularly monitored. Blood abnormalities such as leukopenia, anemia, or bleeding may occur, so blood tests to assess the situation are important. Signs of liver dysfunction may include hepatitis, jaundice, or increased liver function test results; liver health should be closely monitored. Gastrointestinal symptoms may include gastritis, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain; if these symptoms are severe, the medication should be discontinued and a doctor consulted. Adequate hydration is necessary during treatment with this drug; particularly with high doses, it is important to drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration and to reduce the risk of kidney toxicity. This medication should be administered as soon as possible after the onset of symptoms, ideally within 5 days of herpes zoster or chickenpox symptom onset. For the treatment of recurrent genital herpes, consult a doctor on whether to continue use for more than a year. Consciousness-related disturbances may occur during treatment; caution is advised against operating vehicles or hazardous machinery. This medication may interact with other drugs, so it is important to inform your doctor, especially if using drugs that affect kidney function or certain other medications. Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should carefully consider the risks and benefits of using this medication, and it is advisable to discontinue breastfeeding while taking it. In the event of an overdose, symptoms of kidney damage or central nervous system abnormalities may occur, so immediate medical assistance should be sought, and blood dialysis may be required if necessary.
