Precautions

This medicine should not be used in patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication, its ingredients, or valacyclovir. It contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance or specific genetic metabolic disorders should not take it. Patients with impaired kidney function should be cautious as neurological side effects may manifest easily when using this medicine. Patients with poor liver function should also use it cautiously due to the risk of worsening liver function. Infants, children, and elderly individuals may experience side effects more readily, so administration should be done with care. This medication can rarely cause serious allergic reactions, such as anaphylactic shock; if symptoms like low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, or chest tightness occur, stop using it immediately and seek medical attention. Skin rash, fever, blisters, urticaria, etc. may occur, so discontinue use and consult your physician if these symptoms appear. Severe skin conditions, hair loss, mental confusion, seizures, drowsiness, and various neurological symptoms may occur, particularly in the elderly or those with decreased kidney function. Report any changes in urination, hematuria, or proteinuria to medical staff immediately as kidney function may decline. Be aware of hematologic symptoms like easy bruising or bleeding. Abnormal liver function symptoms, jaundice, or gastrointestinal symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting should also prompt a visit to the hospital. Adequate hydration is important while taking this medication, especially at high doses to prevent dehydration. For the treatment of shingles or chickenpox, it is effective to take the medication as soon as symptoms start. Awareness of potential consciousness disturbances arises during use; thus, it is advisable to avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should discuss the use of this medication with their physician as it may affect the fetus. In nursing mothers, this medication can be transferred to breast milk, therefore it is safer to cease breastfeeding while on this drug. In infants or children, it should be carefully administered at the minimum required dose only in necessary cases, especially in newborns or low birth weight infants as its safety has not been established. Elderly patients may have increased drug concentrations due to decreased kidney function, so dosage and administration intervals must be adjusted along with adequate hydration. In case of overdose, neurological symptoms and renal failure may occur, which necessitates immediate appropriate treatment at a hospital, and blood dialysis may be considered if necessary.
