This medication is used to prevent and manage asthma consistently. It is also effective in alleviating symptoms caused by seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis. Therefore, it is used to improve asthma and allergic rhinitis symptoms.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and youths aged 15 years and older should take 10 mg of montelukast orally once daily. The 10 mg orally disintegrating film should be placed on the tongue to dissolve without water. For asthma patients, it should be taken once daily in the evening. For allergic rhinitis patients, dosing time should be determined according to the patient's condition.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years should chew 5 mg of montelukast once daily or place it on the tongue and allow it to dissolve without water. Additionally, 5 mg orally disintegrating film should be placed on the tongue once daily.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of asthma and allergic rhinitis, and there can be abnormal symptoms affecting the nervous system; therefore, if changes such as anxiety, depression, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts occur during treatment, immediate consultation with a doctor is necessary. This medication contains aspartame, a synthetic sweetener, so patients with phenylketonuria, a hereditary disease, should limit use and be careful not to exceed the recommended dosage. For formulations containing lactose, this medication should not be administered to patients with genetic issues such as galactose intolerance. Various adverse reactions such as fatigue, headache, abdominal pain, fever, cough, nasal congestion, and rashes may occur during treatment; if symptoms are severe or persistent, consult a physician immediately. This medication is not intended for use during acute asthma attacks, and emergency inhalers should always be prepared and used for acute symptoms while dosage of inhaled corticosteroids can be gradually reduced according to a physician's guidance. Do not use this medication alone for treating exercise-induced bronchospasm; if necessary, combine it with inhaled β-agonists. Patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin should avoid taking aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs during the use of this medication. Serious side effects such as systemic eosinophilia and vasculitis may occur infrequently; therefore, if related symptoms appear, immediate medical consultation is required. No significant interactions with other medications have been reported, but caution is warranted when used alongside certain hepatic enzyme inducers. Use during pregnancy should be limited to necessary cases, and caution should also be exercised during breastfeeding. Can be used for children and elderly individuals, but safety and dosing must be followed as per physician's instructions based on age. There is no specific antidote for overdose; treatment should be given according to symptoms, following physician's instructions. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and transferring to other containers should be avoided. Even if there are no symptoms, take this medication consistently, and prepare emergency medication during acute exacerbations; if neuropsychiatric symptoms occur, notify a doctor immediately.

Serious side effects

Hives, angioedema, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, cold sweats, pallor, severe anaphylaxis, severe rash with high fever, blisters, peeling skin, pain in mucous membranes of mouth/eyes, toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, asthma attacks, respiratory abnormalities accompanied by cough and fever, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), extreme drowsiness throughout the body, sudden and severe headaches.

Mild side effects

Restlessness, aggressive behavior, anxiety, depression, disorientation, attention disorders, stuttering, sleep disturbances, hallucinations, insomnia, memory impairment, obsessive-compulsive disorder, psychomotor hyperactivity (including irritability, instability, and forwardness), sleepwalking, suicidal thoughts and behaviors (including suicide), tics, weakness/fatigue, fever, abdominal pain, injury, digestive disturbances, infectious gastroenteritis, dental pain, dizziness, headache, nasal congestion, cough, influenza, rash, ALT increase, AST

This medication is sensitive to moisture and light, and should be stored at room temperature between 1 °C and 30 °C. It is also important to store it in a tightly sealed container to prevent air ingress.
