This drug helps prevent the occurrence of asthma and aids in the continuous treatment of asthma that has already developed. It is also used to relieve symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

Adults and adolescents aged 15 and older are prescribed 10 mg of Montelukast once daily. Take 1 tablet, 1 pack, or 1 sheet in the evening once daily. A 10 mg orally disintegrating film should be placed on the tongue to dissolve without water once daily at 10 mg.

Child dose

Children aged 6 to 14 years chew 5 mg of Montelukast once daily. Children aged 6 to 14 years take 5 mg of Montelukast once daily by placing it on their tongue and allowing it to dissolve without water.

Precautions

This drug may cause serious neuropsychiatric symptoms; therefore, if symptoms such as restlessness, anxiety, depression, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts occur during use, you must inform a doctor immediately. This drug contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, so patients with phenylketonuria should avoid taking it, and aspartame intake should be limited. Contains lactose, so patients with galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this drug. Side effects such as fatigue, headache, dyspepsia, nasal congestion, cough, and rash may occur; if these symptoms persist, consult a doctor. This is not a medication to be used during acute asthma attacks, so always have an emergency bronchodilator ready and use it immediately for acute symptoms. Do not abruptly stop inhaled corticosteroids or replace them with this drug; dosage should be adjusted gradually according to the physician’s instructions. Patients with aspirin hypersensitivity should avoid aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs while taking this medication, and should consult a doctor if necessary. This drug can rarely provoke serious immune reactions such as vasculitis; if symptoms such as rash, worsening pulmonary symptoms, or cardiac issues occur, inform healthcare personnel immediately. No specific interactions have been reported with other drugs, but when used with drugs that induce liver metabolism, monitoring by a physician is required. It should only be used during pregnancy when necessary, and caution is required during breastfeeding. It can also be used for children and the elderly, but the dosage and safety according to age must be strictly observed. In the event of overdose, since no specific antidote exists, one should immediately visit a medical facility for appropriate treatment. This drug should be kept out of reach of children, and it is safer not to transfer it to another container. Even if there are no asthma symptoms, take the medication consistently, consult a doctor if symptoms worsen, and do not stop or switch medications based on personal judgment.
