Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

View approved original text

This medication is used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Patients may take this medication alone while following a diet and exercise regimen. If blood sugar control is not sufficient with monotherapy, it can be taken in conjunction with insulin or other oral hypoglycemic agents. Especially when blood sugar control is difficult with sulfonylureas or metformin monotherapy, combining this medication with metformin can be beneficial. This medication is effective in managing type 2 diabetes by enhancing blood sugar control abilities.

How to take

Adult dose

Individual adjustments are made for each patient. Swallow without chewing with more than 1/2 cup of water. Take orally once a day, before breakfast or just before the first meal. 1. Monotherapy - Initial dose: Start with 1 mg of Glimiperide once daily and can increase by 1 mg at 1-2 week intervals. - Generally, additional effects are minimal when administered above 4 mg, but if necessary, adjustments may be made.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those who are comatose. It is also safer not to administer it to patients who have previously had allergic reactions to this medication or any of its components. In patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function, it is recommended to switch to insulin therapy instead of using this medication. Pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, and breastfeeding mothers should not take this medication. Patients with severe infections, or those before and after surgery or after severe trauma, should also be treated with insulin. Caution is needed if gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea or vomiting occur, as there may be a risk of hypoglycemia due to poor food absorption. This medication contains lactose and should not be given to patients with lactose intolerance or specific genetic metabolic disorders. During the first week of treatment, there is a high risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels should be closely monitored. Particularly, elderly patients, those with poor nutritional status, irregular eaters, individuals with an imbalance between exercise and diet, and those consuming alcohol should take extra caution against hypoglycemia. Patients with reduced kidney or liver function, or those with other endocrine diseases may also respond sensitively to this medication, requiring careful management. This medication can cause hypoglycemia, with symptoms such as headaches, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, confusion, drowsiness, and loss of consciousness. If hypoglycemia occurs, it is essential to consume food containing sugar immediately, and in severe cases, treatment in a hospital is necessary. During initial administration, symptoms such as blurred vision, gastrointestinal disturbances, liver dysfunction, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions may occur, so if any unusual symptoms arise, patients should inform their healthcare provider. This medication should be consistently taken with dietary changes and exercise for blood sugar control, and sudden lifestyle changes or illness should be discussed with a doctor. When taken with other medications, there may be an effect on blood sugar control, so patients must inform their healthcare provider about any other medications they are taking. Special attention is needed for interactions with beta-blockers, certain antibiotics, and steroids. In case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, requiring immediate emergency treatment and appropriate measures such as inducing vomiting or gastric lavage. The safety of this medication has not been established in children, so it is not recommended for use in individuals under 18 years of age. In the elderly, impaired kidney function may slow the excretion of this medication, so dosage adjustment and caution are necessary. Keep the medication out of reach of children and store it in its original container to maintain the quality of the medication.
