This medication effectively lowers blood pressure in individuals with essential hypertension, helping to maintain vascular health. It is also used in heart failure patients (particularly those in NYHA Class II-IV) who have difficulty taking ACE inhibitors, contributing to improvement in cardiac function. For patients with left ventricular dysfunction or reduced contractility after myocardial infarction, it helps to reduce mortality risk. It is used effectively to enhance the health of patients with various cardiovascular issues.

For essential hypertension, oral administration of 80 mg of valsartan once daily is recommended. Patients who do not achieve adequate blood pressure control may increase the dose up to 160 mg or a maximum of 320 mg. Elderly patients (75 years and older) should start with 40 mg once daily. Patients with renal impairment, fluid depletion, or mild to moderate liver impairment should start with 40 mg once daily, and follow-up regarding liver impairment is needed.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as breastfeeding women, should not use this medication. Patients with severely impaired liver function, cirrhosis, or biliary obstruction should also avoid this medication. Patients with hypersensitivity or a history of hereditary angioedema should also avoid taking it. It is not administered to patients with severely impaired renal function, primary hyperaldosteronism, or certain kidney diseases. Caution is needed in elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, or mild liver impairment, and dosage adjustments may be necessary. Patients with valvular heart disease or cardiovascular disease, as well as those in a state of fluid depletion, should be cautious as this medication may cause a rapid drop in blood pressure. As it lowers blood pressure, dizziness or fainting may occur when first taking the medication; if these symptoms occur, medical personnel should be informed immediately. Headache, dizziness, cough, diarrhea, fatigue, and other side effects may occur during treatment, but most are mild. Patients with heart failure or those post-myocardial infarction should regularly monitor renal function and electrolytes, and consult medical personnel if symptoms worsen. This medication may interact when taken with other antihypertensive agents or diuretics, so all medications being taken should be reported to medical personnel. Specifically, caution is warranted when taken with potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements as blood potassium levels may rise dangerously high. It is safest not to use this medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding; it is recommended to discontinue breastfeeding if using this medication. Safety and efficacy have not been established for children and adolescents under 18 years of age, so it is advisable not to use it. In case of overdose, extraordinarily low blood pressure or altered consciousness may occur, requiring immediate emergency treatment. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children and transferring to other containers should be avoided.
