Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to this drug or any of its components or have previously shown hypersensitivity to valacyclovir. Caution should be taken when administering this medication to patients with poor kidney function, as it may cause adverse reactions in the central nervous system. Patients with impaired liver function should be administered the drug carefully due to the risk of further deterioration of liver function. Caution should be exercised when using this medication in infants and children, especially in neonates or low-birth-weight infants, as safety has not been established and it should only be administered when necessary. Elderly patients may be more likely to have reduced kidney function, which can lead to increased blood concentration of this medication and a higher susceptibility to adverse reactions; therefore, dosage and administration intervals should be adjusted and used cautiously. While using this medication, serious allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock may rarely occur. If symptoms such as low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, or chest tightness occur, administration should be discontinued immediately and appropriate treatment should be sought. Skin rashes, fever, blisters, urticaria, etc. may occur, and in severe cases, serious skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or Lyell's syndrome may occur, so administration should be stopped if symptoms appear. CNS symptoms may include altered consciousness, disorientation, decreased concentration, aggressive behavior, hallucinations, confusion, seizures, drowsiness, and anxiety, particularly in elderly patients and those with impaired kidney function. Renal-related abnormal symptoms such as reduced kidney function, hematuria, and proteinuria may appear, so caution is advised. Hematological and lymphatic system abnormalities may lead to leukopenia, anemia, bleeding, and purpura; any unusual symptoms should be discussed with a doctor. Liver function abnormalities, hepatitis, and jaundice may occur, so it is important to periodically monitor liver function test results. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as gastritis, constipation, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain may occur, and if severe, treatment should be discontinued and care sought. Adequate hydration is necessary while using this medication, particularly in high doses, to prevent dehydration and reduce the risk of nephrotoxicity. If symptoms do not improve or worsen during the course of treatment, alternative treatment methods should be contemplated. Patients with weakened immunity may be more suitable for intravenous administration. During administration of this drug, caution should be exercised when engaging in activities that require alertness, such as driving or operating machinery, as altered consciousness may occur. This drug may interact with other medications, particularly those affecting kidney function or those such as probenecid, cimetidine, theophylline, and mycophenolate mofetil, so consultation with a doctor or pharmacist is advised. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should carefully consider the implications of taking this drug on the fetus, and breastfeeding should be ceased during treatment. In the event of overdose, serious symptoms such as coma, seizures, and renal failure may occur, necessitating immediate medical attention for appropriate treatment. Prolonged high-dose use of this medication may impact genetic abnormalities or reproductive function, so it is essential to adhere to the recommended dosage.
