Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hypercholesterolemia
This medication is used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It is primarily helpful in reducing the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in adults with risk factors for coronary heart disease and in patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it is effective in reducing risk after vascular interventions or in patients with chronic stable angina. It also contributes to reducing the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, fatal and non-fatal stroke, angina, and hospitalization due to congestive heart failure in patients already with coronary heart disease. Moreover, it is used to lower total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and to increase HDL cholesterol levels in the treatment of hyperlipidemia, especially in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia, dyslipidemia, and in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years.
For the treatment of hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily; for patients requiring a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol, it can be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The dose is administered within a range of 10 to 80 mg once daily. Lipid levels should be analyzed to adjust the dosage within 2 to 4 weeks after initiation. For patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dosage is 10 mg once daily.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10 to 17) is 10 mg once daily, and the maximum dose is 20 mg once daily. Dosage adjustments should be spaced at intervals of 4 weeks or more.
This medication may cause muscle-related symptoms; therefore, if muscle pain or weakness worsens, or if creatine kinase levels significantly increase, use should be stopped immediately. Patients with liver dysfunction or a history of liver disease should avoid this medication, and they should undergo regular liver function tests. If allergic reactions, skin rashes, hives, or severe skin diseases occur, discontinuation should occur immediately, and consultation with a physician is necessary. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as breastfeeding women, should not use this medication, and fertile women should use appropriate contraception while taking it. This medication may interact with certain drugs; thus, it is crucial to inform the physician or pharmacist about other medications being taken, especially those that affect liver metabolism. Elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function have a higher risk for adverse muscle reactions and need to be observed more cautiously when using this medication. It is not safe for children under 10 years of age to use this medication. In cases of overdose, as there is no specific antidote, treatment must be provided based on symptoms, and liver function and muscle-related tests should be monitored. This medication should be stored in its original container and kept out of reach of children.
