Treatment of obesity through weight loss and weight maintenance, and reduction of the risk of weight regain
This medication helps in weight loss or maintenance in obese patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m² or higher, or those with a BMI of 27 kg/m² with comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia, when used alongside a low-calorie diet. It is also effective in reducing the risk of weight regain. Thus, it is used to support obesity treatment and weight management, improving health.
The recommended dose of this medication is 120 mg of orlistat per dose, taken orally 3 times daily with a fat-containing meal or within 1 hour after a meal. Patients should continue a nutritionally balanced, mildly hypocaloric diet in which approximately 30% of calories are derived from fat. Daily intake of fat, carbohydrates, and protein should be distributed evenly across the three meals. This medication may be omitted if a meal is skipped or contains no fat. Because this medication may reduce the absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene, patients are advised to take a multivitamin containing fat-soluble vitamins to ensure adequate nutritional intake. The vitamin supplement should be taken at least 2 hours before this medication or at least 2 hours after it, such as at bedtime. Taking more than 120 mg per dose 3 times daily does not increase the effectiveness of this medication. Based on measurements of fecal fat, the effect of this medication appears 24~48 hours after taking it. After treatment is discontinued, fecal fat content generally returns to pretreatment levels within 48~72 hours. The efficacy and safety of this medication have not been evaluated for periods exceeding 4 years. Studies have not been conducted in patients with hepatic and/or renal impairment or in elderly patients.
Children under 12 years of age: No studies have been conducted.
This drug should not be used by patients with chronic malabsorption syndrome, patients with biliary obstruction, patients with known allergy to this medication or its components, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, and nursing mothers. As liver damage has been reported infrequently, if there are signs of liver dysfunction, it is essential to notify a doctor immediately and discontinue use of this drug and undergo liver function tests. Patients with hyperoxaluria or calcium oxalate nephrolithiasis should take caution when using this medication. This medication may frequently cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, abdominal distension, constipation, oily stools, increased bowel movements, or fecal incontinence, which typically appear within three months of starting treatment and usually resolve within 1 to 4 weeks, but in some cases, may persist for over six months. Some patients may discontinue treatment due to adverse reactions, with gastrointestinal adverse reactions being the most common reason for discontinuation. Serious adverse drug reactions have been reported, including hepatic dysfunction, allergic reactions, coagulation problems, hypothyroidism, pancreatitis, hypoglycemia, and seizures, so any unusual symptoms should prompt immediate consultation with healthcare professional. This medication may increase gastrointestinal adverse reactions when taken with a high-fat meal; therefore, it is recommended to distribute fats evenly over three meals a day. Additionally, this drug may reduce the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene, so it is recommended to take multivitamins containing vitamins A, D, E, K, and beta-carotene at least 2 hours before or after taking this medication. Signs of liver dysfunction include decreased appetite, itching, jaundice, dark urine, pale stools, and right upper quadrant pain; if these occur, it is necessary to inform a doctor immediately. Patients with diabetes may experience improved blood glucose control with this medication, which may require adjustments in their hypoglycemic agent dosages. Excessive weight loss can increase the risk of gallstones, so caution is advised when losing weight. When used in conjunction with oral anticoagulants, blood coagulation levels should be monitored regularly, and it should not be taken with cyclosporine. This medication is contraindicated in pregnant or nursing women, and its safety and efficacy have not been established in children under 12 years old. In case of an overdose, observation for 24 hours is necessary, and recovery usually occurs quickly. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, away from light and moisture.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication is sensitive to air, light, and moisture, thus it must be sealed in a special container for storage. Additionally, it is important to keep it in a cool place below 25 degrees Celsius to maintain its effectiveness.
