This medicine is used for the treatment and prevention of herpes virus infections, including primary and recurrent genital herpes. It is also effective for the treatment of acute pain due to shingles virus infections and is used for the treatment of chickenpox in children over 2 years of age. It helps to improve symptoms associated with various viral infections.

How it is given

Adult administration

1. Treatment of herpes virus infections - Administer 200 mg 5 times a day at 4-hour intervals for 5 days - In cases of severe primary infections, treatment may be extended - In severely immunocompromised patients or those with gastrointestinal absorption disorders, the dose may be increased to 400 mg per dose or switched to intravenous administration 2. Precautions

This drug should not be used in patients who are allergic to this drug or its ingredients. Patients with poor kidney function may experience psychiatric and neurological symptoms while using this drug, so caution is necessary. Patients with impaired liver function should use this drug with caution as liver function may worsen. In infants or children, it should only be administered as minimally necessary, and special caution should be taken for newborns or low birth weight infants as safety has not been established. Elderly patients are more likely to have reduced kidney function, which may lead to increased drug concentration, so dosing and intervals should be adjusted along with adequate hydration. If signs of allergic reactions, skin rashes, fever, or hives occur while taking this medication, it should be stopped immediately, and medical consultation should be sought. Serious allergic reactions, such as shock, may rarely occur, and if symptoms such as low blood pressure, difficulty in breathing, or chest tightness appear, treatment should be stopped immediately, and emergency care should be received. Neuropsychiatric side effects may include impaired consciousness, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, drowsiness, etc., which may be more frequent in patients with kidney dysfunction or the elderly, so caution is advised. Kidney function may be impaired, so if hematuria or proteinuria appears, inform the healthcare provider. Abnormal liver function, gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain), blood abnormalities (anemia, thrombocytopenia, etc.), skin symptoms may occur, so report any abnormal symptoms immediately. If symptoms do not improve or worsen while taking this drug, other treatment methods should be considered, and particularly, treatment for shingles or chickenpox should be started as soon as possible after symptom onset. During treatment, adequate hydration should be maintained to reduce the risk of dehydration and kidney toxicity. This drug may harm the fetus during pregnancy, so it should only be used when absolutely necessary, and breastfeeding should be discontinued since this drug can be transmitted through breast milk. Drug interactions may occur when taken with other medications, so particular caution is required when taking drugs that affect kidney function or certain other drugs concurrently. Overdose may lead to kidney damage or central nervous system symptoms, and if overdose is suspected, contact a healthcare provider immediately and receive appropriate treatment. Caution should be exercised during activities involving risk, such as driving or operating machinery.
