View approved original text

This medication is used in patients with type 2 diabetes who use both glimepiride and metformin, to assist in blood sugar control in conjunction with diet and exercise.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is administered 1 to 2 times daily before meals or with meals. The dosage can be adjusted based on each patient's current treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerance, for which appropriate blood sugar monitoring should be performed. Generally, treatment is initiated at a low dose, and dosage can be adjusted based on the current medications and blood sugar levels of the patient. The initial dose in clinical trials was glimepiride/metformin hydrochloride 2mg/500mg.

Precautions

This medication can cause severe lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia; therefore, it should be discontinued and a doctor should be consulted if there is a rapid deterioration of kidney function or signs of dehydration. Patients with impaired kidney function or those taking certain medications should use this medication cautiously, and caution is also needed for excessive alcohol consumption or liver dysfunction, which increase the risk of lactic acidosis. This medication is not administered to patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, acute metabolic acidosis, severe liver or kidney function impairment, pregnant women or nursing mothers. Elderly patients and individuals with high risk of hypoglycemia, nutritional deficiencies, irregular meal intake, or excessive exercise should be particularly observed closely when taking this medication. This medication may cause gastrointestinal symptoms (such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, etc.), which are more frequent during the initial treatment period but usually improve over time. Allergic reactions or blood disorder symptoms may occur, and if symptoms such as rashes, severe fatigue, or bleeding appear, a doctor should be informed immediately. Blood sugar control should be regularly monitored, and kidney function tests should be performed both before starting treatment and regularly afterwards; if kidney function declines, dose adjustment or discontinuation may be necessary. There are many drug interactions, so if other medications are being taken, it is essential to inform a doctor or pharmacist, and particularly to avoid alcohol consumption. Pregnant or nursing women should not use this medication as it may affect the fetus or newborn; insulin therapy should be used as a substitute if necessary. Safety in children has not been sufficiently established, so caution is required when administering to pediatric patients. Overdose may lead to hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis, so care should be taken not to exceed the prescribed dosage, and if adverse symptoms occur, medical attention should be sought immediately. Caution is necessary when driving or operating machinery due to the risk of accidents from hypoglycemia. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children, and transferring it to another container is detrimental to maintaining quality.
