Relief of neuropathic pain
This medicine is used to treat neuropathic pain, which is pain caused by nerve damage. Neuropathic pain is characterized by chronic and severe pain, which can significantly interfere with daily life. This medication alleviates pain by modulating abnormal signal transmission in the nerves. Therefore, it helps reduce the patient's pain and improve the quality of life. It is effectively used for the treatment of neuropathic pain.
This medication is administered orally regardless of meals. Typically, the starting dose is 5 mg taken orally twice daily. As a single dose, increase gradually in increments of 5 mg at least one week apart until a maximum of 15 mg is taken orally twice daily. Based on the individual patient's age and symptoms, the single dose can be adjusted appropriately within a range of 10 mg to 15 mg and administered twice daily.
This medication should not be used in patients with an allergic reaction to this medication or its components. For diabetic patients, if weight gain has occurred while taking this medication, dosage adjustments of antihyperglycemic agents may be necessary. Patients with impaired renal function, elderly individuals over 65 years old, and women who are pregnant or nursing should use this medicine with caution. During treatment, symptoms such as drowsiness, dizziness, or loss of consciousness may occur, so careful observation is required, and if these symptoms arise, the dosage should be adjusted or discontinued. Caution is required during activities requiring concentration, such as driving or operating machinery, especially for the elderly, who are at increased risk of falls and fractures. Liver function may be affected, necessitating liver function tests and symptom monitoring, and if decreased appetite or fatigue is experienced, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. Weight gain may occur, so regular weight checks are needed, and dietary adjustments or exercise should be undertaken if necessary. This medication is not a cure for the underlying cause of neuropathic pain but serves as an adjunctive treatment to alleviate symptoms, so underlying conditions should also be treated. Sudden discontinuation may lead to withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, nausea, diarrhea, and decreased appetite, so gradual tapering of the dosage is advisable. Visual disturbances such as blurred vision or double vision may occur, so report any unusual symptoms to healthcare professionals immediately. This medication is excreted and metabolized by specific renal transporters and enzymes, so concomitant use with certain drugs may increase serum concentration and risk of side effects. Particularly, caution is needed when used with probenecid or cimetidine, and co-administration with lorazepam or alcohol may enhance central nervous system depression, requiring caution. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should use this medication only when the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks to the fetus, and nursing mothers should decide based on the therapeutic benefit and breastfeeding advantages. Elderly patients often experience decreased renal function, requiring dose and administration interval adjustments, and should be cautious of fall risks due to dizziness or drowsiness. Safety in children has not been established, so use is not recommended. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as headache, weakness, and speech disturbances may occur, and appropriate treatment should be administered based on the symptoms.
