Treatment of herpes simplex and shingles (acute pain) and improvement of chickenpox
This medication is used to treat and prevent infections of the skin and mucous membranes caused by the herpes simplex virus, including primary and recurrent genital herpes. It is also effective in the treatment of herpes zoster virus infections, particularly aiding in the relief of acute pain. However, its effectiveness in postherpetic neuralgia has not yet been proven. This medication is also used for the treatment of chickenpox in children aged two years and older. Overall, this medication is effective for treating various viral infections and alleviating acute symptoms.
For the treatment of herpes simplex virus infections, administer 200 mg 5 times daily at 4-hour intervals for 5 days, and treatment may be extended in cases of severe primary infections. For severely immunocompromised patients or those with gastrointestinal absorption disorders, dosage may be increased to 400 mg per dose or administered intravenously. For children over 2 years, follow adult dosing; for children under 2 years, administer 1/2 the adult dose. For the treatment of chickenpox in children over 2 years, administer 20 mg per kg of body weight (maximum 800 mg per dose) 4 times a day for 5 days.
This medication should not be used by patients with known allergies to this medication or its components, or to valacyclovir. Patients with impaired kidney function should use this medication with caution as neurological symptoms may occur. Patients with decreased liver function should use this medication carefully as it may further worsen liver function. This medication should be used cautiously in infants and young children, especially in newborns and low-birth-weight infants where safety has not been established, and should only be used when absolutely necessary. Elderly patients may have reduced kidney function which can increase blood concentration of this medication, potentially leading to increased adverse reactions; therefore, dosage and administration intervals should be adjusted and used with caution. During treatment with this medication, allergic reactions or skin rashes, fever, urticaria, blisters, etc., may occur. If such symptoms develop, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. Rarely, serious allergic reactions such as shock or anaphylaxis may occur; if symptoms such as low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, or chest tightness appear, discontinue administration immediately and seek appropriate treatment. Neurological symptoms such as altered consciousness, confusion, hallucinations, convulsions, drowsiness, and anxiety may occur, especially more frequently in elderly patients and those with renal impairment. In patients with kidney issues, renal-related symptoms such as renal failure, hematuria, and proteinuria may present, necessitating caution. Liver-related side effects such as liver dysfunction, hepatitis, and jaundice may occur, so regular liver function tests are recommended. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may arise; consult a physician if symptoms are severe. Adequate hydration is essential during treatment with this medication; especially with high-dose administration, ensure to drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration and reduce renal toxicity. For the treatment of herpes simplex and chickenpox, the medication should be taken for 5 days; for shingles, for 7 days, and if symptoms do not improve, a change in therapy is advisable. Patients with weakened immune systems may consider intravenous treatment. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should use this medication only when absolutely necessary considering potential risks to the fetus, and breastfeeding mothers should discontinue nursing during the treatment period as this medication can be passed into breast milk. This medication may interact with other drugs, especially those affecting kidney function, or with theophylline, cimetidine, probenecid, or mycophenolate mofetil, so exercise caution when co-administering. In cases of overdose, serious symptoms such as coma, seizures, and mental confusion may occur, requiring immediate medical treatment, and if necessary, blood dialysis may be performed to reduce drug concentration. During treatment, caution is advised when driving or operating dangerous machinery as cognitive impairment may occur. Overall, this medication should be used carefully considering kidney and liver function state, and it is vital to consult a physician immediately if side effects or adverse symptoms arise.
