It should also not be administered to patients for whom gastrointestinal stimulation may be harmful, such as those with gastrointestinal bleeding, intestinal obstruction, or perforation. This medication contains lactose, so individuals with genetic disorders such as galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take it. Serious allergic reactions such as shock or anaphylaxis may occur during the use of this medication; therefore, if symptoms such as low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, hives, pallor, or sweating occur, the administration should be immediately stopped and medical attention sought. Because liver function may worsen or jaundice may develop, if abnormal liver function tests are noted, medication should be discontinued and physician's instructions followed. Endocrine disorders such as gynecomastia or increased prolactin levels may also occur; if such symptoms develop, the medication should be stopped. Thrombocytopenia or leukopenia may occur, hence regular blood tests are necessary, and if abnormalities are detected, the medication must be halted. Kidney function and liver function test values may rise, making periodic testing important. Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rash, redness, or itching may occur; if these symptoms arise, administration should be stopped and appropriate measures taken. There may be symptoms of movement disorders, such as tremors; if abnormalities manifest, patients should consult a physician. Chest or back pain and fatigue have been reported rarely. Since this medication enhances the action of acetylcholine, it should be used with caution, and it is advisable to avoid prolonged use if gastrointestinal symptoms do not improve. When taken with anticholinergic drugs, the effectiveness of this medication may be reduced, so care must be taken to adjust the dosing intervals. During pregnancy, safety has not been established; hence it should only be used if benefits outweigh risks, and during breastfeeding, this medication may be secreted in breast milk, so it should be avoided if possible or breastfeeding should be discontinued. Safety in children has not been fully established, so it should be used with caution. Elderly patients may present with decreased bodily function and be more susceptible to side effects, so symptoms should be closely monitored and dosages adjusted if necessary. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and transferring it to other containers may lead to accidents and compromise the quality of the medication, so care should be taken.
